wrepete1951 | Why are so many people down on Wal - Mart these days? |
I don't understand why, but it seems as if Wal - Mart is rapidly gaining somewhat of a bad reputation. What's up with that? I've been in a number of their stores and have always been treated very well. What's going on? |

Maybe because of unfair treatment of their employees, prices that keep going up, discontinuing programs such as lay-aways and such. According to others, they have been "going downhill" since Mr. Walton passed away. |

Its not in how they treat their customers but how they treat their employess that has given them a bad rep. Walmart has put earning caps on all employees. Meaning that they wont pay you anymore an hour than what they consider top pay for that position no matter if you work there for 50 years. Plus they are no longer hiring full time employees which means they wont ever have to offer insurance anymore because no one will ever get more than 30 hours there in a work week. They have also decided to drop their layaway. There will no longer be layaways for people to be able to pay a little at a time on an item. Layaways are the only way a lot of people are ever able to afford things with a big price sticker. |

Wrepete....You found the perfect Q! Bottom line. Wal-Mart abuses it's employees and the public. Can't figure and old man like Mr. Sam would have stood for all of what goes on now, but one never knows. I do know Mr. Sam was a good businessman and he DID invade small town America when he was at the helm. I've seen lots of small towns fight Wal-Mart and lose. Maybe now, it's catching up because the old man is gone and lots of folks thought something about him that wasn't necessarily true. One of our stores here locally is dirty/nasty! The other is brand new. I try not to go to either anymore because we've had several stabbings and shootings this year. Would You? That to me causes a bad rep ----- Don't you think?
Good Luck!! Hope you get a good answer. |

Wal Mart is not what Sam Walton intended it to be, in any way, shape, form or fashion. Do you remember when Walton was alive? The object was to sell AMERICAN MADE GOODS, with pride!
They sell more foreign made junk than you can shake a stick at.
They have cut employees drastically.
Recently, they axed the lay-away.
Wal Mart employee policies are ridiculous.
I could go on and on. |

How do I count the ways? First off when a Wal-Mart comes around to a nice small or mid town U.S.A. it puts most of the local bussiness into chapter 11. Oh well that's competition you say. Well they compete by exploiting and the total destruction of poeples lives around the globe. Say they need denim for new jeans, they will buy alot. This gives them huge purchacimg order power. So they will go to 5 or 6 denim makers and have them start bidding themselves to the bottom, sometimes unrealisticly so. So who ever gets this huge contract turns out to be a curse on workers managers. With so much pressure to meet deadlines and produce their are stories of youngsters forced to work 18 or 20 hour days in factorys as hot as 125 degrees, women who sit on stools stitching, not allowed the time o go to the bathroom forced the humiliation of crappimg themselves as they work workers not understanding capitalim after being state nutured their whole life some getting beaten to death for nodding off on job. I heard of one over stresed supervisior whose workers could not meet immpossable quotas, locking them all in some barnlike structure, where they lived and setting it ablaze. Then of course they had bid too low so workers are always getting stiffed for meger wage.. Like after month of slaving near some machine only to drop and sleep by it a few hours a night for the promise of 64 cents a day. Surprise! you owe us for room and board etc.
Don't worry Wal-Mart was well aware of alll this as these annoying stories wouldn't stop.
After awhile it was immpossible to get workers as the stories spread, and they would have to move futher & further out into the provinces to find people isolated enough to come to do work.
They must have done something by now, China is booming. Perhaps they found poorer people to exploit, because behavour at home says they still think of their employees as neccassarry bodily function, must be dealt with, unpleasant, perhaps useful as fertilizer(my emphise s)
They pay low wages and are so stingy, they seldon allow people to work the amount of hours required to get any benifts, like if your state law says that if u work 30 hrs a week .Company must pay benifeit package. They have no qualms keeping bread winner of family on 29 hours a week over 5 years.
Also as law suits imply the odd time they do put some one on over the 29 hour. it will always b a white young single boy, over a senior more experienced woman. Even if she has been their years without missing a day and soppurting a couple of chidren alone.
Next I find this one really gauling and funny. It goes tothe lenght of the greed and wha t they think of workers. Now I will tell u the story as I recall it. I read it in one out of three of Michael Moore's books either "Stupid White Men, "Dude Wheres My Country?" or "Downsize This"
Here is how I recall story; Some woman worked at Wal-Mart 4 a long time maybe 20 yrs. or more. I don't rember if she retired or left due to illness. Regaurdless she needed a wheelchair. Her children needed a loan of $5,000. so she could live in her house, they would build a ramp, add fixtues to bathroom, kitchen etc. The kids thought before they went to bank theywould ask Wal-Mart. Who knows maybe they get a better rate? Of course they were politely told to more or less piss off. They thought nothing more of it, until years later when the woman died as they were settling her estate when they came across something never meant for them to see. Somehow because when kids asked for loan this paper accidently was put in womans file. Literaly called "Pheasant Death Tax" at 1rst confused kids thought they were going to receive (I forget # either $180,000. or $280,000.)
From life insurance Wal-Mart had on woman. They were wrong Wal-Mart collected. It seems this is not illegal and other companys do it to. That is unknown to employee they take out life insurance on you. After you die company gats back all the wages it ever gave you.(wouldn't put it past some to slow poison you to off you sooner.) The children were particularly gauled due to loan refusal knowing full well they would get all monies back. I think they sued I don't remember outcome.
Now they have new health plan practice. Everybody better hopes falls on *** because it will cost the whole country instead of Wal-Mart. They are now signing up employees for medi care or caid. And a lot of other companies are taking notice. Hopefully now that u guys have a democrat majority they will end this travesty. It looks to me like Republicans ecouraged and glorified in robbing the public trough....I have to run up to store now, thank God not Wal-Mart and I'm sick of telling their misdeeds., but are you getting the idea of why they are not well liked?.....MARY |

they dont pay employees well and get away with paying minimal benefits or none at all--as a result, many full-time Wal-Mart employees are on AFDC |

small business owners who have to compete with Wal-Mart do not like Wal-Mart. However, Wal-Mart is good for the low to middle class consumers, due to low prices. My son was trying to print his term paper when our printer ink went dry. Luckily, Wal-Mart is open 24 hours per day, and I was able to buy a printer ink cartridge at 11:00 pm at night. |

I don't know, I love it! Where else can you get a shirt, batteries and beer all for under $30 in one place! I live in a small town and all we have is a regular one, it takes an hour to get to a Super Wal-Mart, that makes me sad...sniff, tear :( |

Walmart does have low prices on most things which is good for alot of people but quality sucks! Target has a better quality and then, around where I live anyway there is no other store to choose from because they drove everyone else out. The produce is bad and they always have bugs in the stores. I went to get a pumpkin for Halloween and all of them were crap. When they drive stores away and have no one left to compete with they can drive up their own prices and people can do nothing about it. Another thing is Wal Mart is always dirty! No matter which one you go to. The people working there could care less about you, the parking lot is always trashed. And whats with the people that stand at the door?! They rarely greet you like they are supposed to or check your receipt so do they get paid just to stand there or what? |

I think it's just because people tend to associate Wal-Mart with trailer trash or ghettos, and a lot of people are snobs and won't buy something at a place where "low-class" people shop. I think those people are stupid!! I llive right next to a Wal-Mart (which is NOT located anywhere near a trailer park or ghetto, thank you very much) and I go there all the time for everything I need- groceries, oil changes, hair products, even a goldfish once. It's true that some of the people who shop there aren't exactly socialites, but when is it ever a bad thing to just be a normal person looking for a bargain? That's another thing- their prices really are the cheapest you'll find. If some uppity snob wants to go pay twice as much at some snooty Whole Foods, be my guest, but I am always happy with the stuff I buy at Wal-Mart, and how much I save by shopping there too. Even if I was as rich as Paris Hilton, I would still shop there because I know value. My only complaint about Wal-Mart is the length of the lines in checkout. It seems that no matter when I go to my Wal-Mart, I end up having to wait in a 20-minute line, but oh well. I just flip through magazines while I wait. |
