I assume you're talking about the packaging.
There are three main reasons for the use of unimaginative packaging for supermarket own-brand products;
1. It's cheaper to make. They want to make the product as inexpensive as possible (own-brand generally equals no-frills, budget products), so they don't waste money on elaborate, expensive graphic design and pricey multi-coloured packaging with photos and so on. The simpler and less elaborate the design, the cheaper it will be to develop and produce.
2. It looks cheaper. Since own-brand products are intended to be a budget buy, the supermarkets deliberately make them look cheaper, to draw the attention of shoppers looking for budget purchases.
3. Conversely, it puts off more affluent shoppers. Just as budget shoppers are attracted to cheap looking products, well-off shoppers avoid them in favour of more attractive, expensive products. This snob-value is completely intentional; if budget beans were as well-presented as full-price beans then many people would buy the cheaper option, even if they could afford otherwise. Supermarkets therefore choose to make the budget options look unattractive to affluent buyers, who then wouldn't be seen dead buying them or having them in their cupboards (they also instinctively feel that something that looks cheap will also taste cheap). |

Own brands are imitations of famous brands. For them to be interesting means they would have to be different. This would defeat the object of the entire exercise, so I suggest that we focus on their inanity and compliment them on that.
