Now that 90% plus of all salaries/wages are paid directly into bank accounts and employers insist on doing it this way, the banks are now in a win win situation where by the can basically charge whatever fee they like as we have to use there services. First Direct who are introducing charges now will no doubt lose a few customers but the majority will stay as apathy plays a big part aswell as the fact that banks make it incredibly difficult for you to move accounts change direct debits etc etc. So look out for the majority of banks to follow suit and introduce charges too.

remember when the banks started saying they would charge for using someone elses cash machine. That backfired as people started closing their accounts resulting in a rethink the same will happen again. They say it will only be for people who dont use any of their products so take out a credit card and never use it you wont be charged.

Only one bank is, and only if you earn less than £1500 per month. If you're bothered, why not just switch to a bank that doesn't charge.

In the UK, most current accounts are free, but some banks are trying to claw back some money from people who sued them for overcharging in the past.
If my bank starts charging for my current account, I'll shop around and go elsewhere. They'll soon get the message.
