People tend to not want to take a chance and buy products of companies in bankruptcy, especially such a large purchase as a vehicle.

The reason they give is that "No one would buy a car from a bankrupt company". The reason is not well thought out, however. Bankruptcy does not necessarily mean end of business - it can simply mean re-organization.The company will still be around, still making parts and honoring warranties. Re-org is painful and everything is scrutinized by a judge and the courts. Not only that, bankruptcy connotes failure. Begging for a bailout is the easier road.
To wit: No one buys a car from a company close to insolvency, and few are buying from GM, Ford and Chrysler anyway.

Because they will then restructure without the union and of course the union doesn't want that. The owners don't want that either. They're getting kick-backs from the union.
