Why are the salaries of corporate CEO'S so disproportionate (in some cases a 1000 times) with that of workers?

top 1% make more then 60% of the population. It did not use to be so polarized, but the changes in the economy over the last 25 years, loss of decent paying jobs to overseas, and the trickle down economic policies has eroded the middle class. In short, the rich have been getting richer, and the poor have been getting poorer. Unless I am mistaken, 50 million Americans do not even carry health insurance anymore.
My guess is that in another 25 years, 90% of the population will end up peasents in a feudal system.

Because these arrogant, elitist bastards all sit on each others corporate boards and approve one another's compensation packages.

When the people at the top make the rules for each other, that's what happens. And CEO pay keeps increasing, often even when the companies the CEO's represent are performing poorly.

bubba
When you look at CEO compensation the most of the total package is in stock and options. Stock and stock options do not cost the company cash flow. They can be viewed as a transaction between the owners of the company (the stock holders) and the CEO. Paying stock and options to a CEO dilutes the stockholders but it does not affect the ability of a corporation to pay its employees.

Well you see this is capitalism at it's best. Socialism - which gets a bad rap because it is erroneously linked to communism - would have it where everyone gets a great wage and no one is "holier than thou" or so filthy rich they can't even spend their money spending it foolishly!
I don't think ANYONE Is worth 1000 times the dollar value of the next guy. If the workers stopped working - the CEO would be out of a job.
Fair wage for fair work is what I like.

Tikva
I don't think people understand the type of pressure and stress that CEO's are under. The CEO leads the strategy for the entire company and its failure or success is up to him/her.

Before you suggest CEO's deserve less money, go walk a mile in their shoes. It's not an easy job.

Spock (rhp)
finding an ordinary worker is a simple and easy task.

finding a good CEO is very difficult.

so, which one has the bargaining leverage?

right, the CEO.
