Why are there so many companies going private all of a sudden?
Recently there are so many stories in the news about publicly traded companies being sold off to private equity firms. Anyone know the cause of this?

Haven't heard much about it, it's really just the nature of business.

Under private ownership the company gets time to look at it's medium to long term objectives. It can invest for the long term as It doesn't have to bow and jump for the City/Stock Market who demand increase upon increase in the most toughest conditions and expect it all yesterday.

One only has to look at the example of New Look, the UK fashion retailer.
From 1999 - 2003 it was plc and it's shares were consistently undervalued and the day to day attention of the management was on improving stock market relations and non-core stuff.
Since 2003 it's been privately owned and has opened over 100 new stores and increased profits for 4 years in a row.

The fact is that a company is better off in private ownership, and can then sacrifice a few profit dips in return for a much better performance a few years down the line.

They go private because they can hide more financial information than would be permitted under PLC regulations.
Private equity companies also look for good cash balances and strip the company taken over of their cash or, borrow more, based on good cash flow.

Normally companies owned publically are not to earn profit but for the benefit of the nation. As soon as a government realizes that a public company is going down and returns are less then the investments, government tries to sell it out. Since, a company owned privately works solely for profit reasons by implementing purely business polices and thus can contribute in economy of the nation by paying taxes. This way, government generates revenue by implementing taxes on the companies which again invested for the public welfare.
