They would file bankruptcy like the airline industry had to. If they filed bankruptcy they would be able to renegotiate the union contracts and yes, some people would be laid off or even let go, but most would keep their jobs, but with lesser benefits like paying more for health care (my dad pays $40 a month for family healthcare through GM) or getting less than the current 90% of their pay when they are laid off. (my father works for GM so I know they get 90% of their pay when they are laid off.)
I am tired of the media trying to convince everyone that the entire economy will fold if the auto companies don't get the bailout/loan. It's almost as if bankruptcy, which was created for situations like this, is not even an option. If the airline industry had folded at this time instead of a few months ago-they'd be standing in the same place holding their hands out for a bailout too.
The auto makers need to file bankruptcy and then play hardball with the unions and also with the gov't about these ridiculous restrictions on fuel economy cars. Americans DON"T LIKE small electric or fuel economy cars. We like cars that fit a family of at least 4 and then our kids can also bring a friend. I carpool kids to different things for church and theatre and I need room for at least 7 people so I drive a minivan. I don't want to drive a little clown car whether it gets good gas mileage or not and I am not worried about Global warming because it's a myth. This is the coldest yer in 7 years and the 1930's are still the hottest decade in history so the gov't needs to butt out of the auto industry and stop placing restrictions on them and tell them to go file bankruptcy and let the unions go to H. E. double hockey sticks! |

You support those who support you....that means you spend the money you make here in the USA on stuff that was also manufactured and sold here in the US....Americans import way more than they export, it has to stop. If the big 3 go under, you will see that the great depression had nothing on whats coming next... |

We're simply giving them a loan. I don't know what the big deal is. Yes, there some irresponsibility going on, but then look at the government bailout. They were handed $700 billion+ with hardly no question. What a joke. The auto industry would lose millions of jobs if they went under and are getting a $14 billion loan with tons of regulations and requirements attached to it.
I just wish the government would bail me out of my financial troubles. Just a mere $25,000 would do it. Come on, guys, help a girl out. |

Envision a few million people suddenly with out jobs. Now envision what happens to all the business's that depend on the auto industry. Parts, body shops, aftermarket, just to name a few. We are in a bad recession now, If one or more of the big 3 falls to BK then we will be in a depression. This is something that affects millions. By the way did you happen to notice that they slipped in a pay raise for Fed. Judges in that bailout bill? Because we all know they really need that. lmao all the way to the poor house. Government gets paid way to much and can indeed vote themselves a raise. Nice!I don't think any measure should pass that includes a Fed. raise or that allows the unions to continue the throttle hold they have enjoyed for decades. Unions are the single biggest factor in the big 3 not being able to compete with foreign auto makers. I want a job where I can stay home and make $25-$75 an hour for not working! I personally would say we will LOAN you the money but you ceo's are fired and the union contracts are null and void. Maybe if people bought American in stead of falling for the Honda/Toyota hype. I have a binder just stuffed full of H and T recalls. Do your part to help. BUY AMERICAN! Gm is especially good on gas, warranty and service. As long as the BK they might file were of the pay a portion/$ it would eventually be a good thing. Especially if it broke the unions death grip. The economy being what it is it could still be a disater but not as bad as if they just fold. |

It's really the fault of the people that ran the company, they made bad decisions and now get rewarded for it.
How about the companies that made good decisions, do they get a reward? |
