Why can't GM issue more stock instead of begging for taxpayer money?
AFAIK most companies that need money issue stock. Why can't GM do this or can they but they just want to see how stupid we the taxpayers are first?

Why can't GM issue more stock? I'll let you figure this one out for yourself. GM's debt-to-assets ratio is so high that they are at risk of filing bankruptcy. GM has very little access to cash because of the amount of debt they have, so they are not very liquid. Moreover, GM's growth is slowing to a halt because they have ceased production of virtually every other model besides the Chevy Volt and other hybrid vehicles, meaning that the odds that GM will remain in business for much longer without help are very low. Finally, GM's stockholders are not getting any returns on their stock investments because GM is too busy paying off their debt with no money to distribute to the stockholders (the owners) in the end. This means GM's stockholders aren't making any money. So what's the point of owning stock if you can't make money on it? What's more is that there is so little consumer confidence right now, especially in the auto industry, that no one wants to buy GM stock for virtually any realistic price, meaning that even if GM stockholders were to attempt to sell their stocks, even for a lower price at a loss, they wouldn't be able to.

Now, let me ask you, if you had a $100,000 to invest in a company on the stock market, knowing just the above information about GM, would you invest your money in GM?

They could, but no rational investor would buy. That's why they're seeking the ultimate irrational investor -- government.

Midnight Train
Because no one wants to buy their stock. That's why they're in the sh*ithouse to begin with.

If a bank won't loan them money, and their sales are down 41% who would buy?

Why should we?

TOASTEE
who wants to buy stock of a company on the verge of bankrupt? not me, I like my money.

spdster2003
Two reasons:

1. Equity is a *very* expensive means of finance and is usually a last resort even among profitable companies.

2. Issuing equity dilutes shareholder value and doing so when the stock is near multi-year lows will make the problem worse

Cost control is key for automakers. And no, it has nothing to do with "greed". The automakers are simply asking for a loan to assist in the restructuring process. I'm surprised you didn't ask this same question when the banks were doing the same.

Would you buy stocks in GM, or any of the American auto manufactures right now?

Would you buy a car from an a manufacture where in a few years you may not be able to find replacement parts because they went out of business?

GM has a lot of available shares. Anyone can buy them. Investors will not normally buy shares in to companies that are known to not be financially stable.

Their only viable solution is a big government bailout. This will save many jobs from both GM and the thousands of spin-off industries. Many of these industries also supply parts for other automobile and military equipment manufactures.

The problem with the American car manufactures, is for many years they have not made a car that was comparable in quality and dependability as the Japanese cars. They also did not pay much attention to customer complaints. It seems that the administrators had low devotion to quality. Over 90% of the people who switch to a foreign car never go back to a domestic one.

I myself used to buy American built cars. After having so many problems with every single one, I gave up on them. Even during the warranty period I had problems with the dealer. After I bought my last locally manufactured car, I really thought I was taken advantage of.

The American car manufactures had many years to get themselves organized to innovate a high quality product for the price, and to respond to consumer opinions.

Well i was thinking that they will get the money then file bankruptcy a few months later and never have to pay a cent back to the government. Also, the government seems like they want to help businesses or get involved in them but really that is communism! If a business is failing it is for a reason and it their own fault not just because the economy if a business fails it is their own fault and the government shouldn't bail out a company that is doing something wrong!

would you buy that stock?
