julio_slsc | Why can't US managers do as well as Japanese managers, Toyota & Honda kick the Big 3 around in the US?? |
http://blogs.automotive.com/6205652/miscellaneous/uaw-and-why-honda-and-toyota-workers-are-not-interested/index.html
Face it, Toyota & Honda build here with US employees, providing good wages, benefits and work. They keep the UAW out by managing their employees humanely.
US managment falls flat on its face and blames everyone. Don't tell me Six Sigma. Toyota & Honda do not use this. Don't blame currency manipulation; Remember if Honda & Toyota sell at a reduced yen, they also must buy parts for their cars and employ people & raise capital in an undervalued yen economy. So what is it? Do the Japanese manage better and what do they do?
Why have our MBAs & UAW failed us? |

The Japanese keep the UAW out by paying high wages, since the UAW has agreed to a two tier wage I suspect the Japanese will soon.Toyota does have 2 plants that have UAW labor and in Japan they do have labor unions.Yes, I work at Toledo Jeep Wrangler Assembly plant and have seen a lot of poor management, but since Daimler has sold Chrysler there has been a big turn around. The plant manager actually walks the plant floor and ask for workers input, something I have never seen in my 30 years at Jeep.As for the artificially undervalued yen,Toyota makes most of their profit from vehicles being imported to the US.Every vehicle Toyota imports it makes $4000-$12,000 from the undervalued yen and Toyota imports half of all the vehicles they sell in the US.If you don't believe Japan and China don't manipulate their currency then you are living in a dream world. |

GM spends about $1,500 per car on employee health benefits. Toyota spends about $300. GM has about 400,000 retirees and Toyota has about 1,000 in North America.
GM spends more per car in healthcare than it does in steel. |

.Take a look at a Pontiac Aztek. It looks like two engineering teams designed the car, one designed the front end, another deigned the rear end and they didn't talk to each another. Need I say more? |

In a word, GREED. The top execs at GM and Ford still get their multi-million dollar bonuses every quarter, even when the company posts losses (their rationale is the losses weren't as bad as expected, so the execs must be doing a good job). Ditto that for the UAW -- they expect to be paid a king's ransom with full benefits for doing a job that requires no education, no experience, no special skills, and no special training. Hey, get a starting wage of almost $20.00 an hour for doing a job a monkey can do -- most people would ask "Where do I sign up?" And they have the unmitigated GALL to go on strike because they didn't get the wage increase they wanted and they'll have to start paying a portion of their own health care costs?!?!! Welcome to the new millenium, United Auto Whiners! |

First - the Japanese have a 2500 year history to develop a culture and manner of thinking. You will find that in all Eastern Asian nations the way of viewing things is much different that that of the Western world - particularly the USA.
Japanese look at the long term results - US managers thing only of immediate financial results.
Japanese treat the workers as part of a team - In years past the worker and company managerment had a lifelong relationship, almost literally cradle to grave.
Because of the Japanese culture they are more conservative in use of space and resources rather than the wasteful approach of US companies.
Japanese have learned from hundreds of years of experience that happy workers are productive. The do what they can under the circumstances to make workers happy.
Japanese believe in physical fitness being a part of a preductive workers and have fitness programs to encourage this attitude. US companies don't care about much more than meeting OSHA safety regulations.
These are the obvious points. There is also that Subtle Asian mentality and management attitudes, honed by thousands of yeares of experience in relations and respect for individuals and the way they resolve conflicts that is totally lacking int he US management approach to treatment of employees and musiness management. The West has a lot to learn. |

Because most managers don't know who James Clavell was.
I strongly suggest you to buy "Shogun" on DVD and after that read Tai-Pan, Gai-Jin, King Rat, Noble House and Whirlwind IN THAT ORDER.
It will take you a few years. |
