Why did UTI bank change its name to Axis bank?

ainindra2004 has given you the correct answer in part. UTI Bank has been using the words "UTI" from its main promoter and was allowed to do for some time to cash in on the popular UTI name for start-up and immediate good business in banking. Since the period of using such name was nearing its end and the financial sense of business prevailed upon the Main UTI Board, they started demanding "Royalty" from the Bank for using its name. Now, the business sense at the Bank's Board found it non-feasible to accept such demands of royalty payments for using the letter "UTI", they preferred to change its name for good as Axis Bank.

Now, let all its patrons hope that Axix Bank don't "Axe" them in due course as its parent Unit Trust of India (UTI) breached the "Trust" of millions of investors some time ago!!

because they want to get away with the name UTI that has been associated with a big financial debacle some years ago in which many indian investers had lost there hard earned money !!

Gen X
they were suppose to pay huge royality to UTI mutual fund for using the name hence to revamp and cut cost they rename

ainindra2004
This is because after January 2008 only the UTI mutual fund would have had the right to use the UTI name according to the agreements.

The answers given by other are probably correct, but just to add what i feel is that UTI wanted to have global presence and since UTI is very much sounding an Indian, hence they changed it to something that sounds very global.

UTI brand was given in 1994 by its promoters and UTI Bank could use the brand only till January 2008 as per Govt directives. Many unrelated shareholder entities like UTI Technological Services, UTI Investor Services and UTI Securities were carrying the UTI brand
