My bf works at walmart...he said it was because too many people would put stuff on layaway for months and then never pick it up and the stuff wouldn't resell...basically walmart claimed layaway was costing them profitt.

Layaway was an old fashioned method of getting customers to return to the stores for sales and merchandise. The new method is using credit cards. Layaway is a liability to the company by tying up cash flow... credit cards provide that cash upon transaction without the high overhead costs. As a business decision, it made perfect sense. The customers don't like it but there's always that credit card to tease you into buying now and paying later.

People not picking up items. Too much work for employees.I think KMart still has layaway. If you need something that bad, Put money away all year so you will have money for the item you want.
