They had way too much of their assets tied into sub-prime mortgage loans. You know those thing that have been foreclosing left and right the last year or so.

All is easy. They couldn't receive back money, spent for investments.
And if bank doesn't have money, bank is a bankrupt. Throught the question could be why the didn't receive their money back?
May be because of shirt management used the politic called "suck standing", thinking only of their personal interests, don't care about share owners, and investing money into the projects are not supposed to have a profit ever. All boys - graduated from the best university lost their mind, don't they?

They haven't closed their doors yet, Chapter 11 is a reorganization type bankruptcy. This happened due to the sub-prime loan crisis, just like all the other banks that are in trouble. The basic reason this all occurred was due to government deregulation.

The worst part is the fact that these companies loans are insured by the US government and now we are all going to have to pay the price for their cooperate greed. If the government had imposed stricter regulations on loan approval process this country wouldn't have this mess on it's hand. Same thing for the sudden rise in gas prices. Just for your info McCain has always been a big pusher of deregulation but since all this has come to fruition he now is changing gears and is promoting regulation constraints on all major cooperation's. Be careful who you vote for cause the Rove lies, smears and deception is alive and well in this campaign just like in Bush's campaign.
