Gordon L | Why do Americans shop at the big box stores Like Walmart, Sams, Costco? |
Don't people realize that small, family owned businesses give better service at a reasonable price? Or do we just not care anymore about quality? |

Becuz Americans don't realize they are subsidizing the Big Box Stores with road construction, welfare, water works, social services and emergency hospital medical treatment. |

large selection, low price. it's true that you can't get anyone to help you at wal-mart if you have a question, but most people don't expect that anymore. |

People buy at those places to save money. Everything is too high, so they buy stuff by the bulk. |

I shop Wal-Mart at times and it does not give me a good feeling. It is easy, convenient! That is what it comes down to. I can go there with my children and get everything I need from groceries to light bulbs to gardening supplies in one stop. If we are doing a home repair job we will run to a local family owed hardware store b/c we want them to stay. We also buy our meats and veggies (for better quality) at a local grocery store. But when in a pinch for time we head to Wal-Mart.
And as for quality, I don't think we do care anymore. With mass production, quality of craftsmanship is a lost art. That is what bothers me! Japan and Taiwan produce tons of garbage items that are unecessary and we purchase them. Who needs that bobble head smiley face on a magnet. It is ridiculus and a waste of resources and energy. |

canadians do it too. But people like to shop at area's that are more advertised. If something is more advertised to people, it means they're more popular and better. Small family business's are sometimes hard to find. Family business's usually just sell one thing but bigger stores sell all kind's of things like toys, electronics and tires. Once in a while I'll go to family owned business's like in chinatown. They have movies there that are still in theatres for a good price and quality. Bigger stores also advertise their lower prices and better service. |

If you're like me, you don't want to pay extra to have someone smile at you. You want to get your stuff, have a reasonable expectation of bringing it back if it doesn't work or I just decide I don't like it after all, and pay as little as possible for it.
I could tell you about the Wal-Mart effect in my small (4,000) hometown. The WM moved in, the "other" grocery store closed, the "other" hardware store started specializing in what they call "project" lines (don't really know what that is, but it seems to be working for them), then the empty "other" grocery store reopened as a "specialty" grocery store with organics and other frou-frou items you used to have to drive 90 miles to get in the "city"...more people went to work, and not just at Wal-Mart; property values are going up (my Mom is tempted to sell; I keep saying "not yet, it'll be worth more later"....
I'll stop now, but basically I'm on the other side on this one. |

I get good quality at the big box stores. Local merchants are out dated and since I am retired my wife and I buy only at Walmart, Big Lots, Meijers, Walgreen and thats about it.
Reasonable prices are not found in ma and pa shops...I am reitred and I don't have much extra cash but even when I workded I avoided the ma and pa shops. Sorry, but they are ok for an emergency or tourist i guess. |

i try to shop at smaller stores. at the galleria next to my job i buy the newspaper at the indian family store instead of cvs. i buy my gas at a family owned gas station instead of sunocco or some other name brand.
i shop at stores like walmart or target because there is not alot of family owned business anymore. plus walmart has everything i need in one stop. i agree with u, we should try to shop at family owned businesses. |
