usually for tax write offs. however, you need to see what charities they are giving to. most money does not reach the person in need. it goes through the bureaucracy that runs it first. many millionaires do run charities, so even though they are donating to a charity there is a chance its their own charity, and they are getting some of that million dollar percentage plus a tax write off for the rest.

Tax write off. Also hopes of donating stock at 5.00 and there announcement and hopefully raising the price to 10.00 the group would make a lot more money, than what the ceo might normally be able to give

Donate 1000 shares of stock worth 500 = $500,000 tax write off.
Sell 1000 shares of stock, which causes the stock to drop to $250 = $250,000 of revenues. Total: income losses.

It's for tax reasons, as everyone has stated. By donating the shares directly and having the non-profit sell them, the government doesn't get the money. If the person sold the shares, he/she would have to pay capital gains tax and then the proceeds would go to the charity. Charities don't pay tax, let alone capital gains tax.
The tax break is normally for the amount donated, so the CEO would get slightly less of a tax break. The particular situation would dictate whether that would matter or not.
