Why do Royal Mail get away with charging a £1 admin fee to collect 23 pence underpaid on item by the poster?
Many Post Office workers over the past years have been prosecuted for the criminal offence of the "Wilful delay of mail" when on occasion they have gone home early and left mail overnight in their car-, or elsewhere. Not all but many do intend to deliver in due course but have been dismissed or prosecuted when caught. In the past the Postman would call at the address with an underpaid postal item and collect double the underpaid amount - with no additional fee. After all, the poster has already paid in good faith a fee for the delivery pof the item and was possibly not aware the item may have been slightly overweight.
How is it the Royal Mail get away with charging an administration fee of £1 for deliberately taking the item out of the normal post stream? Currently the Banks are being admonished for the inappropriate charges they make for sending a letter to customers who may have overdrawn their account. I have had numerous letters missing and many taking days to be delivered !

Don't pay it. The item will be returned to the sender (without the admin charge). He will put the extra stamp on it and post it again. This will have cost the Post Office considerably more and they won't have got their £1.

People can only get away with profiteering if we pay up. If we all tell them to get stuffed, they'll stop doing it.

The Post office will not exist within 5 more years due to bad practises , time to fight back

This has happened to me and is obviously really annoying. If the item looks like junk mail or you don't want it, you can refuse to pay, but obviously you don't get the item!

Back in the summer when this happened to me, i DID pay and it turned out to be a cheque so very nice!

I expect the whole admin thing with overweight mail costs the Mail more than £1 anyway.

because it's a process which is out of the ordinary. Your mail actually costs far more to deliver than the price of a 2nd class stamp. The fact that it's sent off in bulk means they can spread the costs. If they need to take an individual one out of the system, track the sender and get them to pay up, however, that's a cost you can't spread nearly as easily
