Ever since the fall of the Soviet Union, Capitalism has reared it's ugly head. It's the all-American virtue of greed, son. Greed, and a Congress composed of the same sort of folks who run GM, IBM, FORD, BOEING, etc. and etc. and etc...Aaargh! We attempt to delude ourselves into thinking we're a Democratic Republic, but what runs the show is Fascism. Oops - better be careful, one can be "disappeared" these days for being too critical of the Powers That Be...

Only because they can.

Because their company will pay it to keep them.

What shoujld be the maximum amount YOU should get paid for YOUR job. If they offered to double your salary, can you hear yourself saying...no, no that would be greedy of me.

Nobody's forcing anyone to pay a CEO the money they're getting. It's supply and demand.

Not sure why you single out American CEO's, as pay for CEO's is high globaly.

The reason they are compensated well is due to the comlexity, stress, and challenges of the position. Consider that they set corporate direction, create jobs, manage unreasonable government requirements (Sarbanes Oxley), are responsible to shareholders for growth in stock prices, and overall make some very tough decisions. A CEO is PERSONALLY liable for the company's actions (if the CFO cheats, the CEO can go to jail). Also, this is not the job for Joe average. Most people cannot handle the job (most would not even be willing to take on the headaches). Since there are not millions of potential CEO's out there, the value of a CEO (compensation) is higher.

Compare their wages to an NFL Quarterback, consider who contributes more to society, and the CEO is worth their payment.

Because they are greedy and don't care if the company suffers...
