Why do big coffee chains never smell of freshly ground coffee?
Small cafes would sometimes emit the smell of freshly ground coffee, but whenever I go to starbucks or cafe nero the places just smell slightly dusty. With supermarkets using marketing techniques such like dispersing the smell of freshly baked bread to attract customers I wonder how come the smell of coffee is not present in places which base their business solely on selling coffee? Do they never grind their coffee on premises? (I am mostly wondering about starbucks here)...
Is there another logical explanation? Additional Details I have worked in a cafe before and at lunch time we had around 300 people coming through: there was no problem with coffee grinding! you have a big grinder that takes in about 4L of coffee beans and it lasts for a pretty long time!
Because its not fresh. I began to notice that myself. Also, there are no Roasted dates on their bags like others.

I have to agree with 'gimmesom'. Starbuck's ain't coffee. It's granulated marketing hype. A coffeeshop should and does smell like coffee.

i'm pretty certain a large place simply wouldn't have the time/manpower to grind coffee on the premises. think about the number of people that buy a starbucks every day. can you imagine somebody employed to grind that much coffee every day? (can you imagine what a dull job that would be...?)
i expect they ship it in pre-ground to the shops in little packets... do the customers care if it's fresh? they buy it anyway.

Hi. What you smell at Starbucks or other similar coffee retailers is the grounds that they use when making coffee drinks.
Yes it is the coffee grounds.
When the expresso machine is used the waste grounds give off the oder you smell in these places.
They do not roast coffee on site so you will not have that oder present and the oder from the grounds is so strong that is over powers any other coffee oder that might be present.
There is a deli in Hollywood, Calif. ( Victors ) that has a coffee roaster on site. When they are roasting coffee the oder is very strong it can be smelled not only in the store but in the area outside the building.
Here you just get the roast coffee oder as they do not make coffee drinks on site so you are not getting the strong oder of the grounds.
Grinding coffee will emit some coffee oder but roasting is much more powerful.
Any coffee grinding oder that takes place in a Starbucks, or similar store is overwhelmed by the stronger oder of the ever present coffee grounds.
