Because they care about themselves; they don't care about YOU. It's known as "greed." |

It's usually in the employment agreement you are working under.
If you are fired and asked to leave straight away it is usually for an offence that warrants immediate dismissal. If not, then they are obliged to pay you two weeks in lieu of notice.
If you walk out straight away without giving notice, they can withhole any benefits outstanding, such as holiday pay, to make up for the two weeks. |

Easy, when you are the one deciding to leave they need time to fill your spot, when they decide you need to leave they've probably already made preparations for your departure.
Mostly it's up to the individual whether or not to give a notice, if the company has been good to you and you're leaving under good terms, found a better job, more money etc., give a notice. Any case where you're quitting just cause you can't stand them anymore, just quit. |

When you leave voluntarily, they want to have time to replace you. If you are fired and they let you stay for two weeks, there is too much chance that your attitude will affect the rest of the workers and/or customers. Most companies will give you two weeks pay when you are fired. |

usually when you are fired it's because it something in the works. Its not a day decision and they probably have another back up that you are un aware of. A two week notice is when you are leaving on good terms and it shows you had respect for your position to give them enough time to find a replacement.
Plus its great for your next employer to see that you were dependable. |
