Clarus A | Why do corporations refuse to sell affordable medication to developing countries? |
Is there a logical/unavoidable reason, or is it nothing more than profits before people? Or is this problem exaggerated in the media? |
|

most developing countries are what's known as third world countries and the side effects of all the drugs available are more life threatening to the native populous than the diseases themselves. |

The logical reason is that if you continue to sell something at a loss you'll go out of business. |

Unfortunately, corporations are in the money-making business and not in the social welfare business. Even if they knew what the definition of "affordable" is, their first priority is to make money. If they cannot do that, they will fail not only their shareholders, but everyone who works for them. And remember, "affordable" for some people is "free".
Ask rather why governments, which ARE in the social welfare business, do not buy the medicines then supply them to the needy? Answer: Because they do not want to pay for them.
Similarly, the issue is exaggerated by the media because they do not have to pay for anything either, and it makes a good story. If they did have a financial penalty to pay you can be sure they would be much quieter. |

Corporations of any type can refuse to sell any of their products to anyone who can't pay their asking price.
Corporations, even pharmaceutical ones, are in business to make money, not to save lives. Most of the better pharm companies do donate or otherwise make available many of their products at reduced rates to charities and to foreign countries. They can't give away all their product for free, and they can't help the entire world. None of us can do that.
If this concerns you, why not help out by making a donation to a charity like CARE, or UNICEF, or Doctors Without Borders? |
