Why do electricity utility companies encourage people to use less electricity?
Isnt this against their business model - making money?

Because they Utilities have virtual monopolies in the areas that they serve anyway, and their capacity is generally tuned to meet the demands of their area. If demand goes too high, they it might go over their capacity, forcing either brownouts, blackouts, or more commonly, they have go out on the open market and purchase more at spot rates, which will generally cost the utility more than what it costs them to produce the energy themselves. They way utilities really make more money is through higher rates.

You mean by offering "energy efficient meaures" either free or discounted?. They get a tax break on it that's why....

Political correctness and to also ease the load on the company, just because e they are making it does not mean they want it wasted

Stephen M
good publicity. by encouraging people to reduce the amount they use they can say they are being green, which they hope will encourage more people to sign up, consequently making more money

qst2sin4eva
but if a lot of ppl start using more and more..there's a chance of overload and something bad will happen. ex: blackout. and then the electricity companies will have to haul out their own money to fix the problem

to save the environment dopey!!!

by using less energy less has to be produced by the burning of fossil fuels and such like

when all power is produced by renewable and clean methods they'll want you to use electricity all the time - leave your TV on, turn the washing machine right up, everything
