Why do fast food people workers get paid so little?
I used to be a health unit coordinator at a hospital in Pgh. I got paid $11.00/h to sit on my behind and answer phones and put patients test in the PC.
I have moved to GA and i am looking for that kind of work again but am currently working at a fast food spot and i bust my @$$. I get yelled at all day by customers, we work short handed,we do alot of running back and forth and lift heavy boxes and work with no air condition and get paid 6.00. Its not like the company isnt making the money to pay people more so why dont they?
Additional Details
I understand what yall are saying but I do have an education and am currently going for my bachelors in Culinary Arts. There are women that are just working as extra income to pay for there kids college. And believe me It does take skill to have adequate customer service skills. I can see why some people get paid so little but there are people that work at my job that have professional backgrounds that do the job well and they dont even acknowledge them or try to even give them a raise.

Say what!!!!
They are cheap and take advantage of these workers.

They only pay the going rate that is paid right across the board. e.g. GA. It is usually minimum wages for these types of jobs, and they expect you to move mountains.

If you pay peanuts you get monkeys, someone once told me. Just speaking in general terms, not referring to you. Some people are unskilled so they take these types of job, because they can't do better.

Fast food workers don't have any real responsibilities, especially compared to health care workers.
They don't need any real training.... ANYONE can do fast food work... yes, it's hard as hell and tedious, too... but it doesn't take a brain to do it.... other jobs that pay more need someone with brain enough to learn the skills to do the job correctly, and the responsibility enough to take charge of a situation when it arises.

Because its a skill-less job for the uneducated.
For those in high school or those who graduated but thought college was for nerds.

Because it’s a food job. You need a lot of people to run a food operation, it is hard work but its not the most complicated work. Its easier to pay people little money and not put much time and effort into hiring or training them if they are willing to work for so little. A company that pays its employees more puts more time and money into training them to do their job, also those employees are deemed more competent. Sorry, I use to work in food (hated it), went into retail (hated that too), became a temp, and now I work for a bank sitting on my butt all day. I proved over time that I was worth more and got into different fields. Good luck with finding something.

Fast food is pretty much considered to be the epitome of unskilled labor. You don't need a diploma or certificate or anything like that to work fast food. Heck, you can train just about anyone to work in a fast food restaurant, and the owners/execs know it. They would pay more if they had trouble finding people, but apparently they don't have a problem hiring people in most areas that are willing to accept minimum wage (or just a little more than that).
