slackjawhb | Why do gas prices rise at the pump as soon as the price of crude on international markets rises? |
Theoretically, it should take 60 days or so for the new higher priced crude to enter the refinery system, but consumers get juiced at the pumps right away. |

the gas companies have greedy businessmen behind them milking this for all it's worth. they are lying to the public, and making record profits!!! its disgusting. no one in this government will take a stand on this. i think that they don't want to bite the hand that feeds them(money)!!! |

EVERYTHING IS PRICED IN 6MONTHS TO A YEAR WHEN IT COMES TO COMMODITIES. WHEN SOME IDIOT BURNS DOWN A REFINERY SOMEWHERE, OR A STORM, OR ANY DISRUPTION (OR POTENTIAL DISRUPTION/UNCERTAINY) HAPPENS, THE MARKETS PRICE IT IN, EVEN THOUGH, THEORETICALLY, IT TAKES A WHILE FOR THE ACTUAL OIL TO MOVE TO THE REFINERY AND BE PROCESSED INTO GASOLINE. SO, WHOEVER IS BUYING THE CRUDE GETS A HIGHER PRICE, AND WHOEVER BUYS THE GAS WILL TOO.
A DIRECT ANSWER IS, ANY DISRUPT IN SUPPLY RAISES THE PRICE OF A COMMODITY AND WHATEVER THAT PARTICULAR COMMODITY IS USED FOR TO MAKE. |

If you own a $250,000 house and tomorrow Tom Cruise buys the house next to you and your house is now worth $500,000
Do you sell it for $250,000 or $500,000? |

There actually is a small lag. But the companies have to anticipate that increase. Also, after 9/11 most states passed laws saying that gas stations couldn't gouge on speculative pricing increases, and profit from fear. |

Oil is a commodity, just like Lumber, Gold and etc. People buy Futures in commodities. When the Price goes up it is mutual Across the Board, if that makes sense. Call your local Lumber Yard. You may find that the Price CAN Fluctuate Daily for a 2X4.
Here a good example; say last year you buy a Gold ring for $50 and today that same ring worth $100. Why should you get more than $50???? |

I think they have cell phones now. We used to rely on CB's and Tom Tom's. |

it'sprobably due to the "freak-out factor" -- companies know they're going to have to pay more, so they jack up prices instantly--and, after all, they can. |
