Why do people call you in for an interview if they say they want "basic" skills, then expect advanced skills..
in the interview?

Because interviews are a very competitive environment, so that once they start interviewing, having initially been prepared to accept people with basic skills, they discover the calibre of the candidates is high, so they try to sort out who has the best skill set overall. They didn't intend to do that to begin with - but if the candidates are good then basics won't be enough.

Sometimes it's their way of dismissing you because there is something about you that they don't like. You'll find that the more an interviewer likes you, the more they will overlook certain things.

Speak clearly, dress for the job, be positive, smile and be prepared to tell them a little about yourself and background.

TJ
they must've seen something in the resume that looked appealing to them

They usually are looking for people that they can maybe train for a more advanced job. So they ask for someone with basic skills.
Half the time they don't get what they want, so they make the excuse they are looking for expert advance skills.
Happens all the time.

How come they put out ads for help and then hire from with in their company. They waste both your time and theirs. Stupid.
