Why do people hate working at Wal-Mart?

Last year, in a checkout line at Wal-Mart, I heard the woman in front of me ask the cashier about all the unmanned counters. The cashier said that was because people quit faster than more could be hired. She may have meant only at her store, but more generally, I have heard that Wal-Mart is a terrible employer. Why? Is it abusive?

Wal-Mart has a history of overworking and underpaying employees. They refuse to join any labor union, and will rather close a Wal-Mart than join. They also put employees in harsh working conditions and provide little to no healthcare coverage to most employees. Which leads to a 70% turnover ratio.

They also have a history of eliminating all the mom & pop stores in every community they enter, creating a single employer community situation. So if employees wanted higher wages, they would threaten them by saying "We are the only employer of this industry in the community, we will just close the business down."

what I've heard is low pay.

certainly, in my community all the other grocery operations are unionized and pay much better, so what people do is start working grocery at Wal-Mart and then use the experience to land a union job at one of the other grocery stores.

No. It's reaching the bottom line. The counters are empty because it would not be profitable for them to be otherwise.

From what I understand, the company hires employees and gives them enough hours to be considered part time only because then Wal Mart does not have to give benefits.

The simple answer is that when a store is open 24/7 every register is not going to be staffed as most times they are not needed. I worked for wal-mart and other stores before and found wal-mart to be as good a place to work as the others. In my town wal-mart paid more than the union grocery stores.
