Lots of reasons:
Reason 1. They low ball all their vendors, forcing them to sell items at the cost Wal-Mart wants to but things at, which force the manufacturer to have their goods made overseas, which cause job losses for American manufacturing, then they pay the people overseas very little.
Reason 2. They pay their employees very little. They try to limit most employees to less than 40 hours a week so they are not seen as "Full Time". They try to avoid paying benefits, and avoid labor unions.
Reason 3. They drive many smaller retailers out of business with their unfair ability to get low cost products and how they treat their employees.
Reason 4. Most people will buy their stuff there anyway because they perceive that they save money, but they don't on most items, just a few loss leaders to get people in the store. Wal-Mart is ingenious by creating the mentality that you can get whatever you need at great prices all in one place.
I have not been a Wal-Mart fan for a few years, this program on PBS really opened my eyes, check this out:

Their history is rather questionable if not unethical. They have not treated their slaves or the communities in which they are located at all fairly or above board. In the past they have offered benefits to only their full time employees (39 hrs or more per week, and with a very limited number of such positions available) at prices which would consume most if not all of their take home pay. At the same time they offered their employees classes on how to get their benefits from the community at no cost. It was also reported that Walmart has a tendency to milk the community of as many tax dollars for as long as they can and at the end of the tax breaks, leave the community to clean up the mess. Walmart is big enough to demand that suppliers do it their way, both price and product wise, or that their products would not be offered for sale through the entire chain (centralised buying at its worst). This practise resulted in some companies that could not or would not compromise their products quality (that's right Walmart demands special products to be sold only in their stores, check and compare model numbers against other stores, same thing for Home Depot and other big box stores).
Lots of other reasons that thinking people do not shop at Walmart but I think you get what I am talking about. Saving a few cents at the register is not always the best deal. |

It isn't that people don't trust WalMart per say, it is just the way that they do business.
Ask former employees at Black and Decker and Stihl why all of their jobs went overseas to China? Because both companies would not have been able to sell their products to Wal Mart if they had not done so. Why? Because Wal Mart basically said to both Stihl and Black and Decker, this is what you are going to sell your products to us for if you want us to carry your products in our store. So both companies moved production to China to become more competetive. So much for a free market society, when a company like Wal Mart dictates to vendors how to do business. BTW, Black and Decker and Sthil are just 2 examples of companies that shifted manufacturing to China, I am sure there are more. |

I love Walmart, I moved to Europe about a year ago and I wish they had one here. Also Ive never heard of people not trusting it. |
