LITTLE NUGGET
Why do petrol stations that are the same company, eg BP charge different prices on their fuel, also?
supermarkets also do this eg Sainsburys in one area charged more for products than in another area......I think this is wrong does anyone else agree???

just like any other company, they will try it on,all that will keep the price down is competition, and demand,Tesco's can charge different prices to their other store's as long as there's a six mile distance between them, dont know where this ruling came from,I was told this when I complained.
BP have always charged over the odds, I tend to go for Shell or Texaco

I think it is because different stations get their petrol from different refineries. Also it is location location location. Those petrol stations located near major highways will be charging more as they have better visibility and more chance of people stopping to purchase.

Prices aren't only dependant on how much the company pays for them to sell to you. Suppose one gas station has higher rent, or more employees. To offset those added costs, they have to raise prices or risk taking a loss.
On the converse, if a station is near another station that keeps lowering its prices, that station has to lower its prices too (and slash the profit margin), or nobody will go there, they'll go next door.

its to do with the delivery costs. the further from the fuel depots they are, the more expensive it is.

for example, in the midlands the price is around 97.9p a litre for unleaded. down near colchester, its about 95p last time I was there.

Well, they tend to go by demand. A petrol station along the motorway has a caprtive audience and no real competition, but the supermarkets are competing which drives their prices down.

In some ways, for customers it is good because if you could be bothered, you can always chop and change with the cheapest prices.
However, the prices are kept artificially high anyway so we, as usual, lose out.

I believe it depends on the affluence of the area...the richer the more expencive well that's how it works in Melbourne I think....

Corvo
the price of the gasoline is determined by the individual store managers, based upon the price they paid to have the fuel delivered to the store. This is why they are not uniform. Also, one will notice that gas is usually cheaper around major freight lines, and gets more expensive the further away you move from those lines.
