Why do quite a few Charity shops overcharge?
Some of the prices for articles in these shops are ridiculous. Honestly sometimes it's cheaper to buy them new. Books for instance. Some are priced at £3.00! How come? Surely if they given to the cause for nothing it would be far quicker to sell them at a much lower price. Some of them are on the shelves forever, I'm sure if they brought the prices down they would fly off the shelves. Does any Charity shop worker have some answers?

Its because they can get away with it coz if we were to complain about it in the shop we would be shamed as being tight and not wanting to help the charity. They dont even need to pay tax so theres no reason for the high prices. plus can you imagine if we took the stuff to a car boot sale we would have to sell our stuff for like 50p. better that than putting it in charity shop for free so they can sell it at high prices. you would think they would be a little more grateful at times like this, ie credit crunch, rising costs etc.

I went to a charity shop and there was an old lady buying a coat. It was winter and she was in a summer dress. She was 20p short of the money and the staff refused to let her off. So I paid the 20p and walked out. Charity, what Charity?.

Charity shops exist to raise funds for their cause, not to provide cheap things for the general public. They charge as much as they think they can get - it is their duty to do so - and you have the choice of whether or not to support them.

I was shopping in a charity shop in Wilmslow, Cheshire. It was more like an up market boutique with prices to match. Some made your eyes water, they were so exorbitant.

A second hand Marks and Spencer shirt was more than brand new!. There was nothing less than £15 and this was for the manky tat they always seem to have.

Needless to say, I never bought anything and do not shop/donate to that charity.

I only know about Oxfam, because there is one in the village where I used to live.

The village Oxfam shop used to sell fairly cheaply, and then suddenly the prices shot up. So I asked the volunteer ladies what had happened. They told me that prices were now set by the area HQ, and not by individual shops. They could sell only at the prices set by HQ.

They said that sales had indeed gone down, and although they had told HQ, nothing was going to be done. Some people had even stopped coming in to the shop, and had said that the revised prices no longer made it worthwhile.

I also stopped going in.

I've noticed that with cd's here in the US, they are a little over 2 pounds. Nobody is buying them at that price, the cd's are piling up, most of them are junk so it takes forever to find something decent. I have quit browsing through them a while back. Maybe when they can't get in the doors for the stuff piling up they will lower the prices.

Not all thrift stores are entirely volunteer. And the workers are there to make money just like you do at your job.Plus the idea of those charitable organizations is to help the less fortunate. That is less fortunate than yourself. And that costs money.Plus the building they are in has to be paid for.It is not given to them.Neither is the land it is on.Plus the gas to run the trucks around to pickup items. In essence there is a lot tht goes into operating one of those stores. If you have been a reguler shopper in a thrift store you will find that not all of them are like that. They do have sales on just about everything in their stores. At least the ones I have been to.I can't say the same for you.

It varies between the Charity. In my area, the most expensive one is Sue Ryder. It used to be that individual shops set their own prices based on their local knowledge, but now many of the bigger charities work to guidelines from their head office.

I find the best buys are from smaller local charities who work more on the woolworths principle, price it cheap and move it out.

One thing that does strike me is that often the pricing structure is indiscriminate! For example, you will see a rail of jeans all priced at say £5. Some can be Asda £5 jeans and others £60 Levi's. Or a line of coats all same price, some are Matalan but a couple Dannimac.

Oxfam are now selling on ebay. (shame they dont appear to know the difference between Lge and Sml in coats).

PS Just a comment about books, most charity shops find it hard to get more than £1 for a book (which may have cost up to £20) yet people are happy to pay £1.50 for a Sunday paper!

It really depends upon the shop, some are trying to make as much money as possible for their charity, but then they think the rich go in there to get a good deal. I can't think of any rich people that go to charity shops, they might donate to them but they certainly don't go in there to buy anything no matter how cheap it is!

i used to shop in charity shops 10 years ago and they were so so cheap, but now days the whole game has changed. they used to put out everything they got, stained ripped whatever and charge a few pence for it but now everything is carefully vetted and priced high. the people who work in charity shop are volunteers however there will be either a manager or an area manager who is on a full salary plus the rent on the shop etc, they need to make more money. it is no longer set up for people with low incomes to buy clothes but for people on higher incomes to donate money. it sucks but clothes on ebay are cheep as so i don't go to charity shops any more.

If you can find them, go to church related ones, our church has ties with a local Christian charity shop in town, I regularly donate to them, and they are still very cheap. I find a lot of refugees shopping in there and the stuff especially children's clothes don't seem to be bad either.
