finglas9 | Why do retailers insist on the packaging when you return goods ? |
retailers (in England) insist on the packaging with returned goods when you have a complaint. what is the big deal with the packaging ?? surely it makes no difference to your complaint ?? How many people keep the packaging ? None, as far as I know. !!!! Then they say, "i'm sorry we cant deal with it without the original packaging" ?? what a load of fluster and bluff. !!!! |

A load of old packaging I'd say.So if I buy a shirt and a month later I have a problem with it,am I expected to have the original packaging?
A load of old something else I think I would say. |

Blink.

It's not rubbish. They will need to know the batch that the product came from. This is so they can recall the rest of the batch if there is a genuine problem. |

they need the original packaging to check which batch the item came from.most packaging actually says(retain for future reference). |

They need the package to refurbish the item and re-sell it. I work for a company that makes office products. We don't repair anything that is not shipped in the proper package because we don't like getting back the product all smashed up because they didn't pack it properly when they shipped it. |

People like the "pretty" packaging! And it's more re-sellable. That's why manufacturers make the packaging 40 million times bigger than the product. But, hey, it also prevents damage. |

Because it's much easier for them to return it to the manufacturing company they originally bought it from and to reference the item number for information. |

It's a way to try not give your money back.
Packaging or no packaging you are entitled to a full refund, even if it on sale.
Just insist on your refund, tell them you didn't keep the packaging because you honestly didn't think you will return the product.. Then it turned out this and that.
Most importantly be nice to whoever you have to deal with, a little politeness goes a long way.
Another trick is go in on busy times, they will want to get rid of you asap. |

Packaging is included in the cost of the product. Corrugated (card boxes), plastic and styrofoam can be very costly, not to mention the hermetically seal packaging (the packaging not even scissors can cut through) to prevent theft. Retailers are not just selling you the product but the packaging also, therefore if you want a full refund you must return the original packaging and the product. |

The universal bar code is on the packaging, which allows the specific item to be traced. It also helps prevent fraud...if you bring something back without the packaging, who's to say it's just not a cheapie of an identical item you found at a flea market somewhere, and are trying to "return" for more cash?
At retailers here in the U.S., sometimes stores will take the item back, and sometimes not. Those that do, will have all sorts of restrictions on accepting it back. First, of course, you have to have the receipt or record proving you bought it.
Second, it has to be defective in some way...they won't take it back if you just decide you don't want it.
And they usually charge a "re-stocking fee", equivalent to about 15-20% of the retail price of the item.
Also, most stores if you bring back the item in that condition, will only allow you to exchange it for another identical item, or the closest equivalent of what they have.
I went through this experience recently. I bought a bluetooth device and it worked ok for about 3 days, so I tossed the packaging but then the second time I tried to charge it up, the plug wouldn't fit. So I brought it back, and they had the record of my buying it. I asked to exchange it for an identical device, but they were out of stock, and really didn't have a "closest equivalent." So what they ultimately ended up doing was giving me store credit minus a 10% re-stocking fee, and I used it to buy an entirely different device...and this time, I kept the packaging for the whole month warranty time. Fortunately, the second one worked. |
