Why do so many companies only want to hire people with degrees? I realize it gives them more of a professional stature, but what about the people that are less fortunate and couldn't afford college and are sick of working at little companies? |

And the funny thing about that is also that the people that have degrees rarely end up working in the field they have the degree in! My family is yelling at me about school because they want me to continue going but it's so hard for me to meet my bills working fulltime as is! Fulltime classes on top of that will kill me! But if you have the world "bachelor" or even "associate" then people suddenly think that means you know something. Which it doesn't. I guess all we can do is prove our worth in the little companies and try our best to move on from there. Wish I had a better answer for you! I would like to know myself! |

also what about on the job training and experience. I've been a bookkeeper for twenty three years yet a lot a place will not hire because i don't have a degree. I can run circles around these younger college grads. just from what I've learned over the years. |

As the world becomes more high-tech, you have to move along with it.
If you are young, my advice would be go back to school. I was once homeless(with NO $$$), and put myself through school to become an engineer(a real one).

The degrees help the company spot talent that they know is trainable. The person has already proven themselves by making through college. Hiring people is more of a crap shoot. You may get somebody that is better and smarter than any degree holder but you may not and hiring people is expensive. When you account for training costs, the non-productive time the trainer spends training and the learning curve of the new employee you don't want to mess up. People with a degree have many of the basic skills that get a new employee up and going faster and is a safer bet. Go get a degree, it can be a two year degree from a community college, show an employer that you are willing to work for what you want and can accomplish what you set out to do. |

Unfortunately they only care about themselves and are out to makebig money. It's ashame but thats how the world works. It's getting to were everyone needs a degree these days and college prices are getting higher and higher. So it looks as tho your going to have to be rich in order to get richer, the less fortunate can try for grants and finacial services otherwhise you just need to get lucky. Its sad. |

They feel secure in hire a person with a degree because they expect professional work. They can't just take from word of mouth, they have to see the piece a paper that says your qualified. Now, that is bs people use that as an exuse to not go to college. They are so many program for people to go to school and its really important. Plus imagine when you have a degree it builds up your confidence and you too will be qualified to have a great paying position. Then you can pay off your loan little by little. Go back school it's important. |
