For the companies that do treat their hourly employees as disposable warm bodies, the root problem can be found in the ethics of that businesses culture. There are many great companies that value their employees for the work they contribute and the diversity they bring. However, for this lack of respect to be the case, it must be part of the ethical make-up (or lack thereof) of the company. |

Because they are present just to suck as much money as they can. It's all about the quarterly report, shaqreholder dividend, money and growth for the sake of money and growth. Show any compassion, and you'll get your throat cut by the guy who shows none.
The worker is nothing to them but a drain on their potential profit, a necessary evil. This is why, folks, your jobs are going to India and China. Has jack to do with "work ethic," and everything to do with the fact that the bosses can and do treat them like slaves and think of them as such. You pay your worker $10/hr and keep a safe workplace, that costs money. Shackle a 6-year-old Chinese girl to the machines, pay her 2 cents an hour after "living expenses," and you've already saved about $8 per worker on overhead. Now, just keep the prices steady, and you've made that $8 in profit for the same work. It's called "surplus labor" theory and it makes as much sense as Adam Smith's "invisible hand." |

It depends on the job - a very low-end job that has little importance, and is basically for sustaining minimal functions, it probably has high turn-over and won't pay much and can easily be refilled.
If people complain about taking those jobs, they should work harder, get an education, or get a different job. No one is forced to work low-end jobs. They're just too lazy or want some organized-crime labor union to pay them a fortune for a worthless job. |
