petzx | Why do some founders leave their own companies? |
Many times there are cases where the person who founded a successful company leaves his or her own company, and someone else takes over the company as a CEO. I don't get that part. What reasons could possibly be there to leave their own company? They could still do other things on the side. |

The reason why I feel some CE Os have chosen to
leave their own copanies is because, they feel they have
gone as far as they can go, or they feel like they have taken
their company as far as they can. They want new ideas,
younger hipper CE Os. Maybe they feel dipping into a new
gene pool will give the company a breath of fresh air, a
whole new life. |

Pandak and Patty T offered fairly accurate answers. Seeing their replies, I would just collect the 2 points instead of 12. |

There are many reasons. First, the company is an independent entity with its own way of doing things and operating. The founder or founders may start a company, but soon it takes on a life of its own.
Second, let's say you and two others found a company. After a year or so, you're bored. There is a big difference between the skills and attitudes needed to start a company and those needed to run a company. I may be really excited starting a company and running with it for a year, but when it becomes an actual day-to-day operation, you get bored silly. Let someone else run the thing and you can go off and do other things, like maybe dream up ideas for another company.
A third reason someone who founded a company may leave it is due to personality conflict. Three of us found a company. After a while, it's clear that I have one way of doing things and one vision and my other two partners share a different vision, for example, I want a loose easy-going place to work, while the other two want a tight military type place. Pretty soon, I leave.
Another reason may be that I was just in it for the money, so as soon as I can cash in my shares or get a buyer for my shares, I'm out of there.
Another reason is that I've got another idea for an even better company (or product), so I quit to go work on it. |
