Seriously, such a good question! I have always wondered the same thing. Of course people are going to give you silly answers, but I have asked this question before. We have a beautiful veggie stand in our neighborhood that is open 24 hours and they only have one person working at a time and I know that some people are honest....but for the most part, people aren't and I wonder why and how the store owners do this?? I wonder how much of their goods they get stolen? |

because enough people have common sense not to take them. |

maybe they want you to steal them.

people need to see what food looks good or not, your not going to go in a store and ask for an apple. |

the proportion of stolen produce to the benefit of having people SEE your produce from the street is worth the risk |

Becuase the fruit is heavily insured product, and they claim it on insurance. Ha ha, I would assume they make more in sales than the potential loss. Most people are honest. I guess it depends on the area. Eagle, Idaho would be fine, yet downtown Chicago might pose an issue. |

They have security guards, and if they don't have thos they have cameras, but the truth behind it is to instill a sense of security.
It makes people feel like they can safely shop there since obviously the store trusts its patrons enough to display its produce outside |

Oh no we paid a good 3 cents for that apple and you stole it! get him! even though we probably made a good profit of 500 bucks today just for having them outside.
Its like a poster, that you can eat! duh! |

ive always wandered the same thing, and my conclusion is the fruit obviously didn't cost them all that much - they seem confident they'll be making a proft |

they're obviously poisoned Naz is right!
we must top these murderous fruit shop owners and revolt!!!! |

Because they have already poisoned the fruit outside |

They (stores) figure if people are going to steal them from a garden where the fruits and veggies are growing....?
Why not atleast set up a store display where there is a chance for them to come into the store and buy something else....
My source tells it all? |

because the stand of the fruits is moible making it easy to travel from place to place to market there products |

I haven't seen many stores with fruits and veggies outside because it is harder to keep them fresh out there. I've seen more with plants and patio furniture outside.
I guess some stores do it to save space and to entice people to come in. Plus I'm sure a lot of stores have cameras or workers outside who watch for that kind of thing. |

A lot of stores leave a lot of things outside like that. But it's also easy to steal stuff from the inside of the store too. Fruit isn't that expensive. |
