Carahpants | Why do stores have so many check out lanes they never use? |
Dang, it's so annoying. I wouldn't mind waiting in a line so long to buy my goodies but the fact that stores like Target build like 25 check out lanes and never use more than like 6 at a time is so stupid! Why do they go to the trouble of putting in the registers and the candy and all that stuff that goes a long with a check out and make like 25 of them then never use them! And they could use the space to put more product in. Explain. |

Well, maybe the Targets you've been to were like that, but the one I worked at had 25 lanes, and they were constantly calling people over from other departments to make sure that there were never more than 2 or 3 customers waiting at a time. It's difficult to allocate the personnel necessary to run all of them, because it's difficult to predict how much business a store will do during the non-holiday seasons. So, the amount of employees necessary to run all of them at once may not even be there at any given time. Employers hate paying people to stand in one spot doing nothing for more than 20 minutes, so they're always doing a tug-of-war with trying to pay as few employees as possible, but still trying to keep customer satisfaction high. |

They make plenty of registers for busy days especially holidays where they staff a good many of them, but when its not that busy they keep the cashiers to a bare minimum to keep the payroll down as much as possible. |

They planned for the future needs... but sometimes they don't have enough budget to operating all of it...
They use it when the season for shopping has started, like christmas.. |

This annoys me too!!!! I think sometimes it is just to look good and to say they have that many registers on a commercial even though they do not use them all at once.
I guess they do use them for back up when other registers go down. Also, they are there for the busy times of the year like holidays and such when they have more employees.
I just wish they would use Half of them at least!!! Time is precious and I get tired of wasting it standing in the check out line!!!!!!!!!!!! |

They have them there in case they need them. If a register were to stop working then they have backup lanes. They may use more of them during higher volume times as well.
I get annoyed about it too, but I'd be glad they were there if the others stopped working. |
