Why do you continue to shop at Wal-Mart?
By now, it's a common known fact that shopping at Wal-Mart contributes to damaging the environment, driving down job wages, harming the local economy, and supporting the economy of China.

So why do you continue to shop there, ignoring all of this? Are we that greedy? Is it that important to save a few bucks on underwear, toothpaste and kitchen ware? We're just feeding the beast.

Sorry SteveO, but you're trying to compare the introduction of a new technology to the attempted monopoly of retail sales. Wal-Mart has not innovated anything like Henry Ford did. Their only innovation is predatory pricing, a terribly damaging economic practice. In the early 20th centuries, there were many anti-trust monopoly penalties against large companies who attempted things like Wal-Mart has. Remember Rockefeller and Standard Oil? They were broken up into over 30 companies because they were becoming too large. Out of those companies came giants such as Chevron, Exxon, and Mobil. Can you imagine what energy prices would be now if this one giant had developed all of those years with this monopoly? Just recently, Exxon merged back with Mobil. Funny how now a days, all of this monopoly business is simply ignored by the consumers, and allowed by the politicians. Wake up, steveo.

I continue to shop there because it is stupid to pay more for identical items at another store.

Their wages and benefits are typical for the entire retail sector so anywhere you shop is "driving down job wages." Retail is a high turnover, low skilled job and that correlates with the wage paid. If you want higher wages, get better skills and education.

I've worked as a manager for 3 big box retailers over the years. The business model is always the same: 30% full time (including the managers), 70% part time, starting pay of $7.50 - $8/hour, changing days and number of hours each week depending on estimated customer volume, no benefits of part timers, so so benefits for full timers.

If you are going to go after Wal-Mart, you need to go after the entire retail industry.

I think it saves the environment by shopping there. I go to one store and use less gas to get that and make less pollutants by going to one store in a close by location instead of driving all over town to get everything on my list.

As for their wages, do you think that their competition pays their employees more than minimum wage? They don't.

As for selling Chinese products, that's the fault of "Free Trade" deals made by congressmen. Besides, that's what they sell in the local "Mom and Pop" stores also.

True. Wal-Mart has issues.
Though did you expect anything less then their continued existence?
First, everyone is not politically envolved. So the issues you listed will not affect everyeones shopping habits.
Secondly, does Wal-mart offer vastly cheaper prices, plus convenience by finding alot of different stuff under 1 roof.
So while, political opinions are great, around a 1/3 of the population does not have the luxury of letting it take money out of their pockets. So Yes, $100 a month saved makes a difference in alot of people's lives.

I stopped buying at Walmart a looong time ago, specifically for the reasons above. But also, the stores are just plain disgusting and the service just plain stinks. I went up to a worker one time for them to point me in the right direction, and the woman, THAT'S RIGHT A MIDDLE AGED WOMAN, said "Do I look like a F***ing map". I complained, and since then have never been into ANY Walmart.

I'd much rather go to one of those Mom and Pop stores, pay extra and be treated with dignity and respect!!!

last time i checked, this was still America. i can shop where ever i want. you obviously need to take a class in economics. economics drives everything.

based on your philosophy, when henry ford started mass producing the model t, all the horse buggy companies that went out of business should have gotten government grants and loans to stay in business and your great-grandfather (who i assume was also a liberal) should have continued to support them by continuing to use a horse and buggy.

following in your great-grandfathers footsteps, i assume that you are still using a horse and buggy for your primary source of transportation. there is currently a big Christmas sale on buggies going on at the website AmishRus.com. you can pick-up some flannel underwear, baking soda toothpaste and cast iron kitchen utensils there also.

The irony to your question is that you're assuming Wal-mart is driving down job wages, but at the same time accusing people of being greedy by saving money at Wal-mart. Meaning, we should get paid more so we can spend more, according to your argument. While I don't get the 100K a year like you, I do get by comfortably with the cheap wares at Wal-mart. I don't understand why I'd be greedy.

I invest in international stocks, so I am not only saving myself a few bucks, but I am also making money. Also, where do you suggest I shop for toothpaste, underwear, and kitchen ware? Give me a good answer with supporting details, and I will take it into consideration. Otherwise, walmart or bust.

Reason #1 - even if you only shop small local stores, or big expensive department stores, almost everything is made in China anyway. Go and pull tags and see the truth.

Reason # 2 - contrary to the govenrment's lies (statistics) the economy has TANKED and for many Americans we cannot afford to shop anywhere else. What do you expect, kids without socks? No cleaning products? Broke, is broke my friend and many of your fellow citizens are BROKE.

Need I say more?

I do my grocery shopping at Walmart because I'm a trucker and Walmarts are convenient and usually allow truck parking. I do not buy anything made in China anywhere unless I absolutely can't find an alternative.
