Angela L | Why do you think that some communities try to prevent Wal-mart from building a store in their area? |
Why do you think people feel this way? |
|

Because they take business away from local merchants. Wal Mart can sell items for less than local stores can and this often results in local businesses being driven out of business. |
|

Because Wal-mart is a low cost leader and no matter where it goes, they'll do well and kill other local businesses. I know some states like Vermont denied Wal-Mart's invasion. I guess some communities value their neighbors, their jobs, their town and their cultures over lowest prices always. |

There are two reasons depending on the location. First is an area with a lot of mom and pop small shops that cannot compete with the big box stores. Second is union towns who cannot stand the fact that WalMart is not a union store and pays what they consider low wages and they cannot do a thing about it and that galls them. |

Walmart, prices are lower. A lot of the smaller business would probably go out of business. |

b/c everything in wal-mart is cheaper than the "community stores" and thus since everyone will go to wal-mart to save money, the "community stores" owned by generations of families will go out of business |

The other answers are correct. Also, there will be more traffic which will make the roads get potholes sooner. More people and as a result, more noise and more littering and possibly more crime in that area. |

Small communities have survived using mom and pop type stores. The opening of a walmart in their area is hazardous to the livelihood of these small stores. On top of that, from what tends to be the case in Colorado atleast, Walmart typically attempts to build their stores outside the city limits to avoid charging customers the city sales tax. Another aspect of competition that the small store cannot compete with. |

wal-mart forces small mom and pop stores to close - BUT they offer lower prices which people don't take into account until they start saving a lot of money |

Well, ya think that if maybe those small operations would lower thier prices just a tad, maybe most locals would'nt be going out to the closest Walmart.? It's big outfits like this that add a little healthy competition to the picture. |

Personally, I think Wal*Mart is an abomination. They take customers away from local business people. They are perfect examples of our seeming love for cheap goods made in sweat shops overseas. They are gigantic turds filled with horrible, incompetent customer service. And they are ugly monstrosities that remove the last vestiges of charm from our urban areas. |
