Why does Walmart do better in times of recession?
is it because, they're the last-ditch net before people hit unemployment
or because they're subsadized
or because people can't afford to shop anywhere else
or because their competition is cyclical
or because their employee pep rallies involve songs with hand gestures
It does better because their prices are cheaper. It really is that simple. I don't like Walmart, but when times are tough and food prices have been greatly inflated, Walmart offers better pricing on an everyday basis.
*wondering*
because everything is cheaper there.
food, clothes, school supplies & much more are way less then other stores.

Because they are the cheapest. I personally can't stand the place, they are always crowded, the service is lousy, the cashiers are surly and the selection is poor. But, unfortunately, right now I can't afford to spend more just to shop at a store I like. :-(

Because people cannot afford to shop elsewhere whether there is a recession/depression or not. Those people who insist upon shopping at more unnecessarily expensive stores are the ones who are now suffering from overextending themselves financially. People foolishly think that if they shop at expensive stores they are getting better quality and they believe the hype that they NEED something with a designer or brand name. Or, even worse, they believe that it makes them better than everyone else. In reality, they are showing their shallow personalities and warped sense of values.

It's because they are cyclical. Walmart is counter-cyclical. That means that people shop at walmart during harder times so that people get more for their money. They would prefer to shop elsewhere, but not with under recession conditions.
