There are 3 types of fiscal years. One is the calendar year, one is the end of any given month, and the other is what's known as a 52/53 year (some years there will be 52 weeks, some 53 weeks.) The last defines the fiscal year end as a day in a particular week. The idea is that it more closely matches revenue and expense to operations. |

A company as large as Applied Materials probably functions on Fiscal Year (October 1st - September 30th) because it needs each operating company that it owns to submit financials to the parent company so that Applied Materials has time to file end of the calendar year reports, such as Annual Reports. |

It could be because the Federal Government fiscal year ends at the same time and want to stay inline with it. It is easier for businesses to do it that way. |

A fiscal year (or financial year or accounting reference date) is a 12-month period used for calculating annual ("yearly") financial reports in businesses and other organizations. In many jurisdictions, regulatory laws regarding accounting require such reports once per twelve months, but do not require that the twelve months constitute a calendar year (i.e. January to December).
A company, like Applied Materials, can set whatever date as their fiscal year end. |
