t-bone | Why does everyone hate the American auto workers so much? |
what i dont understand when we tried to sell our cars in Japan they didnt buy many, and the only reason they didnt was they had a great repect for their own workers and chose to support them not American. it wasnt that they did'nt like our cars it was that they were just loyal to Japonese made products. Americans turn their back on their own courtymen, The Japonese thought it was funny that American people would not buy thier own stuff. they thought it was dumb. what do you think. now lets hear from those who bought foriegne if your wondering what happened to american finances you who bought japonese korean chinese, products and ignored American anything but American you are one of the big reasons were in trouble proud to be American that makes me laugh and sick at the same time. |

First of all... Japan did not buy Japanese cars because they wanted to support their own workers. Japan could not afford HUGE American cars. Many of the Japanese manufactured cars started after WWII in which the U.S. had pretty much destroyed the economy along with Hiroshima. Japanese bought Japanese because the vehicles were more affortable, smaller, and stimulated their own economy. Remember Japan is an island with A LOT of people so the U.S. cars the sizes of boats were not going to be accepted there and their economy just couldn't afford it. I'm sure your point has some validity but I asure you it is not the "only reason" as you stated.
The first Japanese cars shipped to the U.S. were not very good compared to the U.S. manuf. so they did not sell much. But since the Asian culture seems to be more forward thinking, they have been able to adapt to trends much sooner and with more dedication then the U.S. big 3 and have penetrated our market very well.
Currently I have a Jeep which is made by Chrysler which is U.S. I also have a Buell motorcycle owned by Harley Davidson (another U.S. manuf.). But if I was to go out today and buy a car... it would NOT be from one of the Big 3.
In my opinion... this is the basic concept of capitalism. The Big 3 are now failing because they were unable to adapt to trends. People don't buy something because their country(wo)men (to be P.C. there LoL) built it. People buy things that will fulfill their wants and needs and the cost must be preceived to be less than its value gained.
Simple economics with a little bit of marketing. |

It's not that we don't like our own workers. I'm very proletariat, I believe strongly in the working man, blue collar American auto maker.
The problem doesn't lie in the American consumer, not willing to support there fellow countrymen. The problem lies in those who have power making the automobiles in Detroit.
For years, the sucess of Ford has been, "Lets make a car that's going to break down in a few years, because everyone will still buy a Ford!" That philosophy worked for so many years until people started realizing that it's too damn expensive to keep replacing a car every 3-5 years. The average person doesn't want to spend too much money replacing there car, thus they bought the competitors cars, i.e. Japanese cars, because they are more fuel efficient and don't break down as much as a Ford,Gm, or Chrysler.
I love this country and love the hard-working people in this country, but this is a very very competitive business. And unfortunately, the motto of business is, only the strong survive. Ford, Chrysler, and GM thrived on this for so many years, putting other auto industries out of business for so many years. Remember Oldsmobile?
Look, it's not that Americans aren't patriotic enough to not want to support there countrymen. It's just that Ford, GM, and Chryler cars, aren't good ENOUGH and people don't want to buy a product that is sub-par.
Don't blame the American, blame the CEO's who don't care about the consumer and only wan't money in there own pockets. |

Why do I buy foreign vehicles... quality and price. What is truly sad is that a foreign auto maker can develop, build, import and sell a reliable vehicle for a lower cost than a domestic producer.
Perhaps this does not seem so odd when you consider the abysmal business decisions of the Big-3 and the incredible wages paid to unskilled labor in domestic plants? |

I personally do not hate the American auto workers. I do indeed detest their managers 100%. These organizations have gotten so complex that it is stupid. So nothing short of all managers losing their jobs will make me happy. When these idiots (the CEO's) arrive in private jets seeking taxpayer handouts, as they did this week, any sympathy from me is gone to the management of those firms. And they have the audacity to say that their use of private jets is not negotiable. I am here to tell you that it is.
What the Koreans and the Japanese think about our problem with our auto makers is insignificant. The reason I am mad is that once we had the best cars in the world - for decades. But we starting putting out crap in 1974. It got worse in the 80's. So many Americans got burned once, then stopped buying. Had we run operations properly and anticipated future (present now) needs, we would have one less mess on our hands.
I believe that Ford woke up last year. They have recently introduced some good technology into their cars. Their Escape had the best gas milage in 2008. But it is way too late. I must confess that I bought a Ford this year anyway.
I doubt GM will ever wake up. They will be bust first. I bought a 2001 Saturn and they put the spark plugs inside of the engine. Duh. That's an example of how to ensure that you go out of business. |

I don't dislike American auto workers...it's just that the people they work for are unimaginative and greedy. I'd be happy to buy an American car, if it would run as well and as long as my Toyota. And if the American auto industry had been more proactive in producing 'alternative energy' vehicles, like hybrids, they would probably have cornered the market, instead of the Japanese.
Unfortunately, those who manage the American auto companies apparently decided to stay in bed with the oil producers, and force gas guzzlers down our throats. They also apparently believe we consumers aren't very smart, which is evident by the fact that they thought we'd continue buying SUV's until the dawn of time.
The Japanese didn't buy American cars for the same reasons Americans didn't...because the Japanese made cars are more fuel efficient, and more durable.
What happened with the finances in the American auto industry had very little to do with me, and very much to do with the personal greed of those running the companies. If GM, Ford and Chrysler think they should be getting a piece of taxpayer dollars because their companies are going broke, then they should have been sending extra money to the government when they were doing well. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. Capitalism means that those companies who would succeed on their own have to also be allowed to fail on their own. |

I don't hate the American auto worker. Not at all. I just cannot stand the products that they put out and charge an arm and a leg for that aren't dependable transportation for many years. This is why I buy Nissan and Toyota products as they have little to no repairs for years and years. They just last and last and last. My last big 3 car had the transmission replaced 4 years running and is rattled and was a bucket of bolts that I paid good money for and it just did not hold up. A friend told me to buy a rice burner and I have never looked back
I love America but don't save the big 3 let them save themselves |

I've been driving a honda civic for over 100,000 miles and it never needed a mechanic. All the American cars I've owned have cost me crazy amounts of money to fix and maintain. I'll never buy American again. My GF won't buy anything but American. When her car breaks down every week and mine won't, we'll see what she has to say. |

I am still driving my 1996 Buick Park Avenue V-6 22 mpg in town, 33 mpg at more than 55mph. Seats 6 comfortably. Find me a current american made car (yeah the VIN must start with a 1 to be made in America) that is comperable at any price. My problem is that "American ingenuity" is being used to abuse trust and bilk american consumers instead of creating a good product at a good price. |

It's not the workers. Have you ever heard that a fish stinks from the head down? It's management of the companies and the union.
We did it to ourselves. I remember in the early 80's when a union worker was on TV saying that he had worked for all his benefits and he wasn't giving up a damn thing. That same day we had to push 2 cars off the transport truck to get them in the shop. They were making crap.
The car companies went to $hit when the car men were kicked out and the accountants were brought in. Roger Smith for example. The company CEOs have no earthly idea what life for real people is like. They think 50K for a car is nothing when they pay their yard workers about that and they make millions per year. |

Think of it in a way that a business employer would. There is absolutely no substitute for quality and dependability. Anything less than this and you eventually wind up on the losing end with a bunch of crap. |

Simple. We can't afford to buy American, and the quality is worse. I had a Ford Escort and a Mercury Sable that held up fairly well, but my Ford Probe was a nightmare--we had to replace the transmission three times, and the paint faded in certain areas, but not others, so it looked like a patchwork quilt. We decided to go with a Kia because of the warranty. We have had one very minor thing go wrong (a door latch) but the dealer fixed it quickly and cheerfully. We got the runaround whenever we tried to even get recalled problems fixed on the Probe. |

Be american...buy american! I would much rather keep my dollars spent here in the US. I have 8 Fords and a GM. Put them up against any asian car and feel proud to be seen in them. |

Because we pay retirement benefits, obey EPA regulations, do not lock people in plants, and are not a third world is why U.S. cars cost more. Buy a car made in a foreign car that supposedly is greener? when the process of building it was not? I'd rather pay more knowing the profits stayed here in the U.S. and did not promote third-world countries - 75% of the world nowadays. |
