Why does the retailer Wal-Mart have more controversy than other discount retaliers?
I have noticed that Wal-Mart has more controversy than any other discount retailers? There are websites about Why Wal-Mart is not a good place to work and shop and on the television shows The Simpons and King of the Hill, Wal-Mart has become a parody. On the Simpsons, it is known as Sprawl-Mart and on King of the Hill it is known as Mega Lo Mart. Jib Jab even Joked about Wal-Mart calling it the Big Box Mart in an animated cartoon
.
My question is, why is Wal-Mart have more conterversy than other discount stores and are often in the news for the way the store is operated to who actually shops at Wal-Mart?

I think it has to do with a "david vs. goliath" ideology. Everyone wants to see the little guy prevail, this includes all retail stores except wal-mart. It's also easy to parody because wal-mart is saturated the US marketplace, where other retail stores haven't gone coast to coast, or global for that matter, yet.

they don't pay their employees well and only hire part-time so they don't have to provide insurance.

Because they make the most money. Whoever is on top gets the most criticism

In order to keep prices low, they cut corners in other areas, such as hiring mostly part-time employees to avoid giving benefits. Most Wal Mart employees would be considered the working poor, they have gainful employment yet still live below the federal poverty level.

in addition to what the previous poster posted, wal-mart also strong arms other retailers and suppliers to ensure they can offer the lowest price. for example; take dishwashing liquid, say ajax sells their product wholesale to retailers for 25cents a bottle. wal-mart will inform them that they want ajax for 17cents a bottle and if they don't get their price, they will not purchase ANY ajax at all across all their stores. supplier bow to this because we are talking about tons of stores. so wal-mart often sells products for cheaper than shop-rite or target buy them for.

they practice poor ethics all around and laugh all the way to the bank

Read the book "How walmart is destroying America, and the World" and see the dvd "Walmart high cost of low prices". Then decide for yourself.

They hire ilegals and minorities and working poor and they do not provide benefits. Also they end up by discoraging local merchants,

I just happen to work at a wal - mart store in New Jersey and I absolutely love it. It is hard work and can be a bit of a challenge sometimes but the career opurtunites that wal - mart offers are great. 70% of it's managers in the store and corporate level were once hourly associates. I am an hourly associate at wal - mart and hope to one day go up the corporate latter. and everybody bad mouthes our low prices but have no problem when they are the ones benefiting from them. So wal - mart isn't that bad of a company it's not perfect but it has been a major help to me get direction and finanical freedom.

Everyone pokes funat or picks on number 1. Just the way it is...you can't please everybody all the time...and many people blame Walmart's success at the expence of momandpop shops, when reality dictates that the M&P shops can't compete anyway.

everybody hates number one. they player hating.
