Why does the telephone company charge to have an non-published number?
Think about it. Wouldn't it make more sense to charge a customer to have their number published? I mean, what with the cost of paper and ink and everything. I never could see the logic in charging a customer to have a non-published number.

When a number is not published more people call information and since the operator can't find the number there is more work. That is why they charge more.

It's just the company's way of snagging another dollar fifty from you. No reason, just to cash in.

Coriander
I always thought that was ridiculous too.
But when you have an unlisted number there is a way people can contact you in case of emergency which involves the phone company calling you and leaving a message. I think that's why they charge extra, for that service.

yeah that sounds retarded

The reasoning behind it is that when printing a phone book, they can just put all numbers in it, from one large database. It takes extra work to pick out the ones they DON'T want listed. So they charge you for having to pay someone to pick you out of the crowd.
