Several states do require that taxes be paid on stuff bought out of state (which would include online purchases) but like here in NC, it is often just on an honor system. If you don't declare it on your income tax returns, there's not much they can do about it yet. Some states have tried different things, but the no internet tax thing is mainly a federal gov't idea.

The reason that consumers are taxed on the internet is that they are located in the same state as the company they are purchasing goods from. In the case of WalMart they're in every state so you will be charged tax when making a purchase.
In the future if you're buying a high dollar item make sure to find out if the company you're purchasing from is located in your state as this can has a significant impact on the cost. It may seem more expensive but when you include that some items aren't taxed they may be cheaper.
