Why does walmart scan the receipt when you return something?
I returned a item yesterday at walmart and I was just wondering why do they scan the receipt? Is it to tell if you have returned the item before or the price?

Jackson
As one of the lead designers on their system ... I can tell you that the reason they select to scan the barcode on the receipt is that by reading the universal product code (UPC), the expediency of processing a return is greatly enhanced, thus they are able to serve more returning customers in a shorter amount of time ... and yes, I realize how ironic that seems considering the length of time you may have spent in line to make that return ... but consider how many returns some of those buggies in front of you had and the fact that most of those customers had several receipt to have processed ...
it adds up, but how much worse would it have been had you had to wait for each item to be manually entered?!?!?!

By scanning your receipt they gather all the information they require from their database, it also validate your receipt as genuine,

Tim
They scan the barcode on the receipt. The barcode is a representation of the number assigned to that transaction. Their POS system then looks up that transaction and brings it up to verify the item you are returning was actually bought, on what date and how it was paid. The payment will determine how you receive your refund.

it's to make sure that what you're returning is the exact item paid for on the receipt.. an old scam people used to pull all the time was to buy one, take it home, go back to the store and take another one off the shelf, then try to return it/get their money back with the receipt.. now they're smarter than to fall for that, if the item on the receipt isn't the one in your hands they won't give you any refund..

It actually brings up your receipt on the register. Like a UPC code for everything.

It retrieves all the information on the transaction, including method of payment, whether by credit card, cash, or check. This determines the method of your refund. If you paid by credit card you will get a credit back on the credit card.
