TC | Why doesnt walmart like unions? |
I have read articles that they have closed stores because a union was formed. What do they have against unions? How could it harm them? |

A union is like a monopoly. They get together to fix their wages to make the company (in this case Walmart) pay more money to the workers that they otherwise wouldn't have to pay.
Therefore, if you are an owner (shareholder) of Walmart, you want the company to make as much money as possible. Increased labor costs are bad because it reduces profits. |

they don't like unions(IBEW Local-5) because they will have to pay their employees better wages healthcare etc... They great thing about this is that if unionized that will be the beginning of the end for this "make it china" company people will stop shopping there cause there prices will go up, i really hope this happens, and maybe just maybe this there will be a decline in the amout of crap coming out of china to this country and the reinstitution of manufacturing in this country, be American buy American |

Unions make you reward the lazy just because they've been there the longest. They don't let you promote an outstanding employee unless they are the next in line. They make it difficult to get rid of lazy staff while at the same time dissallowing you to make judgement calls. ie: you have a good for nothing idiot who is always on time and a super star who loves his job and is helpfull and polite but is late for work on 3 occasions. You now MUST fire that person. The unions don't allow for teamwork thus creating an environment of "That's not MY job!". Everyone gets raises based on time spent not how they spent their time.
Unions used to serve a purpose but now the only positive job they do is the same job done by the Labour Board. Now they just take your fees and give you job security. Any good employee will always have job security anyway. |

Simply put because Wal Mart believes in their associates. If there is a problem, an associate has the right to speak to whoever they want (Open Door Policy) Why pay a third party to speak on your behalf, when you can do it yourself for free? Wal-Mart does pay decent wages in comparison to other retail outlets. At a local grocery store, the employee starts off at 7.25 to push carts, now because they are part of a union, they have to pay 200 bucks a month to have someone "speak" for them and try to get better wages... Wal Mart cart pusher starts off at 7.25-7.50 and don't have to pay union fees. Also a union would not work within Wal Mart, because in a union an associate can only work 1 dept, because that is taking away a job that someone else can do. Yeah it would be nice to have every dept. in the store covered, but that isn't cost efficient for the store...Eventually the cost would be passed to the customer. What else does a union do, besides try to lobby for higher wages and charge you union fees. In some trades, it is good but unions should stay out of retail. Do the research call a Wal Mart in your area, ask how much does a cashier with no experience get paid, then call a unionized grocery store, and ask the same question. Here where I live its about the same, with Wal Mart being a little higher. |

Simple matter of controlling the money. When you are in a union, you get benefits and the employer signs a contract with the union. The employer may negotiate the contract, but there is not much choice in the matter. They end up giving the worker more money than they would otherwise get, without the power of the union behind them. |

Because like many companies they are bullies and want everything their own way, no questions to be asked. |

Well... lets see how other industires with strong Unions are doing... autos and airlines, seems Unions were a big part of their downfall. |

Unions would make it hard for them to keep their prices so low. Wal Mart caters to people on state benefits, they lower their prices the week that welfare checks come out so people who are on food stamps can buy more with their stamps.
Having a Union would mean they would have to give guaranteed raises, guaranteed hours and benefits, and that is very costly to a company, especially one that is known for dropping their prices. Plus, it would be harder to let people go, which would then make things spendier for them.
Unions aren't great for every company, and obviously WalMart feels it's not right for them. Ah, the joys of American Capitalism! |

they would have to pay out much higher wages and provide benefits. |

Because if walmart workers were unionized, walmart might actually have to pay decent wages and benefits. |

walmart does pay decent wages
they also offer health care and other benifits.
Walmart is non union because realistically what purpose does a union have for a retail store? i have had many jobs and i have never been in a union and i am perfectly fine.
Walmart is a wonderful place as it provides the products families need at a reasonable price. i dont see how that can possibly be a bad thing.
the answerer above me should be ashamed of herself. The fact that walmart has low prices has nothing to do with welfare. you are and idiot and i hope one day you can feel for one second what those families that need those state benefits feel. |

what possible good could a union do wal mart?
wal mart doesn't want/need interference from unions, can't blame them for that
look at what has happened with auto unions
they got workers big pay, but now cars are made in Mexico
if wal mart paid their associates $25.00 an hour, we couldn't afford to shop there..... |
