AL BUNDY: genius, hero | Why don't WE bail out GM and Ford? |
One thing that would prevent GM and Ford from having to get gov't loans would be if Americans would buy something from them! Now, repeat after me: "American cars are NOT garbage!" Their quality has increased tremendously in the last decade, especially Ford, who actually rates slightly ahead of toyota on some vehicles. (Search yahoo or google "ford beats toyota" if you don't believe me.) All I'm saying is if you are considering a new vehicle purchase, why not domestic? And yes, I drive a Ford myself.
If all the answers I get are nasty answers spouting the myth that foreign brands are better, I'll delete the question so no one gets the 10 best answer points. Don't tell me that, cause I know it's NOT TRUE anymore, and I don't want to hear it! Thanks! |

My Ford's at 141K, runs perfectly, on the original engine and transmission. If I weren't up to my neck in student loans, I'd buy a new Ford in a heartbeat. My whole family owns Fords and Chevys, and no one has had a problem with them.
Michael C I think you're implying that if they scrape by this crisis, they'll go back to business as usual. I don't think so, they already made the UAW take over the health care costs. Ford is goint to bring over the European Fiesta, which is a great car, and they have a hybrid Fusion coming. Chevy has the Volt electric car coming. They are making changes. |

There are some very good cars. However, buying additional cars at this time only props up a bad business model. Like any corporation, to remain competitive, a compay must create a business model and product that is profitable. Unfortunately not everyone likes their models in comparison to other companies. Whether this is a valid comparison or not it is reality.
They once did a project called Blue in order to create a competitive vehicle against Japan. The project failed because they were unable to create such and sell it for a profit.
This means that their business model has a poor cost structure.
By bailing them out we are telling them it is okay to run a company the way they are and as we have seen this will just set them up for future failure. |

Vantage Point

If they have good cars that can be saved, then they have to go through a bankruptcy court to prove it.
Chapter 11 protection may be precisely what is needed to put American auto companies back on the path to profitability. Bankruptcy laws specifically are designed to give companies an opportunity - under court supervision - to reduce costs and streamline operations.
Bankruptcy would not be popular in some quarters, to be sure. The bloated management structure would be streamlined and many overpaid executives would be unhappy about having to find new jobs.
The UAW would be equally upset, particularly since bankruptcy might force an end to extravagant pension benefits and inefficient workplace practices.
