It's because corporations are all about the almighty dollar and try anything in their power to make more of them. If that means replacing real people with computers that can't answer a question, then that's what they do.
Personally, I hate those devices too. They often don't understand what you're saying and will hang up on you, just like a person from India. However, if you say "Operator" over and over again or if you hit 0 over and over again, you usually get a real person.

Most companies are out sourcing call centers.
computerized customer service rep is very expensive since voice recognition technology is still new but not yet perfect. Even miscrosoft's voice recognition have problems when you are in a noisy room.
I think most of your questions were not answered because you are being forwarded to call centers with operators who are not very familiar about the products. where the operator only read scripts.
