Why don't people understand how cinema's make their money?
I work in a large multiplex cinema, owned by one of the major UK chains, and every day for my £5.25 an hour I endure the complaints of customers, who are begrudged to pay the high prices for the snacks that we sell.

Firstly, I do not set the prices.

Secondly, our policy is that customers may bring in their own food, so long as it is not in glass bottles or is hot, and being in the centre of town there are many places nearby to buy food.

Thirdly, people can survive without snacks for the two hours it takes to watch a film.

And most importantly, the cinema only takes 15% of each ticket sale, with the rest going to the greedy distributors. Think about it. Next time you are begrudged to pay for popcorn, imagine Brad Pitt in his luxury mansion, with his millions of pounds, a direct result of his handsome wage - courtesy of the distributors.

So please, go shout at him instead instead of some poor person on minimum wage who has to sweep up popcorn every day.

I hear you. I spoke with a cinema manager once and he told me the real deal also. When I hear people complain, I try to tell them what I heard from someone who works at a big cinema. They don't care and don't want to hear it. It's not just Brad Pitt. It's the whole industry. I'm disgusted with entertainment in general because we have larger problems that need our attention. Entertainment sucks up too much of our valuable time. It should be minor but it seems to be major. Look at all of the money that gets thrown at it. Why?
If I were a leader then that would go. No way. Priorities would change.

Tell them to complain to Brad. Or Tom or whoever. And that you'll also sign the petition.

I bet you've called a call centre with an attitude about your insurance or mobile phone bill etc. Well I work in a call centre. I dont set the rules I just follow them. Its the same thing. Everyone does it. You see, when they are paying for a service and you are the person they see then you are the face of the company.
I suggest you start to think of a better retort when people moan at you. tell them to bring their own food next time if your cinema allows it. most places dont.

i know exactly what your talking about i used to work in cinema and its hard work cleaning the theatres in ten minutes when theres tons of garbage on seats and then you have to put up with rude customers cinema work is hard work weather your an usher food stand cashier or the person making the food

WOW...here in Cali tickets for a movie are AT LEAST 10 dollars....and you can't bring in your own food, the cheapest popcorn and drinks are like 5 dollars each.......

But yea...people are just greedy pigs!

First, People will ALWAYS complain in every service job.

Second, the cinema can charge $100 for a coke if they want. If someone doesn't want to pay, they don't have to.

I wonder if people go into a Hugo Boss or Gucci store and complain that prices are too high for a shirt. I'm guessing the answer is 'NO'.

I'm kind of with you, in that I understand. My housemate's ex is the manager of a Vue and he enlightened me on all this, said they often don't make anything on ticket sales unless it's a really big film. What does bug me is that cinemas don't sell anything I really like, it's all popcorn, sweets, tasteless junk food and pop. They don't even sell fruit juice, which annoys me cos I hate fizzy drinks (except with alcohol) and I hate sweeteners and fake juice (Oasis etc). It would be nice if they sold sandwiches...

People have to whine to somebody -- it makes them feel better. Look at you; you are whining on the computer.

They whine to you because you are there. Don't take it personally.

Because they only see the cost. Don't take it personally-its not your problem. They ought to give you some training to deal with customers.`
