OPEC has it's customers (us) over a barrel. This is a never ending cycle. What OPEC is doing and why oil prices have been so high recently is cutting oil production, this leads to short supply- as soon as they (OPEC) gets a sense that the consumers are fed up with oil prices like we did over the summer- they (OPEC) crank up production to put some downward pressure on prices. Once they get a sense that the consumers are happy that the prices are going down like what was indicated by today's consumer confidence report, they cut production again to put upward pressure on the prices. It would take more than a one day boycott to saturate the supply and shatter the price of oil.
A lot of people say that what we need is a clear, organized approach to utilizing alternative fuels. The problem is if we ever get close to doing so- OPEC would crank up production so much to make the price of oil plummet and make it not cost effective for anyone to pursue an alternative. They have done this before and will do it again until we get truly serious about getting off this oil addiction we have. |

It has been tried before with email forwards and things like that. It doesn't seem to work. I would gladly boycot, but I don't know how you get an entire country to do that. |

great idea but i'm wondering how it can be done.you need lots of real volunteers. how about starting it first with a signature campaign or something. or you can also coordinate with non-government organizations in your area. what you're thinking of is big and complicated. but if you really feel this will make a difference, then go ahead. good luck! |

The "snopes.com" article posted by "answersbeta2.1" is a very good explanation as to why a one day boycott WILL NOT work and what WILL work. Compare it to losing weight or quitting smoking. Just dieting or not smoking for one day does not result in losing weight or quitting smoking. There must be a sustained lifestyle transition. |

You've called their bluff. Congratulations. But you'll have to be serious. One day is nothing. Y'all will have to stay away from work, school etc for at least a week. Let them choke on their excess production. If they can't sell it for three days their systems will be screaming, "Take it for free!!! Please empty the gas station tanks - we've got to put this stuff somewhere.

Because ultimately, no matter the price of gas, American's don't want to give up the luxury of their cars. Which is fine. Economically, it is worth the extra money for me to pay to fill up at the tanks than for me to subject myself to public transportation. My time is more valuable than that. So I choose to fill up, no matter the price of gas. |

Everyone would just buy the same amount of gas anyways between the days before and the days after.
Besides, there isn't much we can do about gas prices. Our politicians won't let us drill in Alaska, in most of the Gulf, or off the shores of the west coast. Although with oil prices as high as they are now it's economically feasible, the government is not refining any of the oil shale that is located on federal lands out west. It is one of the largest known reserves of oil in the world and we're just sitting on it. Also, no one wants to build any new oil refineries... we haven't had any built in this country in 30 years even as consumption has gone up.
Worldwide, demand for gas is going up. The developing word, most notably China and India, will continue to grow, and they will require more and more oil as they do. I think the best way out of this mess is to find an economically and environmentally sensible way to create hydrogen for fuel cells, and get ourselves off gas altogether. Good fuel cell technology would also get rid of the need for the power grid, which is one of the biggest vulnerabilities against terrorism we have. |

sorry, but dumb idea. if the economy doesnt crash instantly, we will just fill up tomorrow. and very few people cant go for many days without hitting the gas station. |
