dunno d | Why, especially at these bad times, does the Union want to have a strike at Verizon? |
Increase after increase. When does the union learn that a strike is not beneficial to their members?
Look around at see what unions have done. Yes, they did a lot, increase, health benefits, etc., etc. But, with what result? They all got to greedy, because not most of these firms are going bankrupt and will lay-off many people. Maybe thinking by the union would a wise idea. Also give your members exact information, not just small bits. Tell them in detail what you demand. Let them vote for a strike or not. Which you did not do by Verizon. |

As a former Verizon employee for 18 years, I saw 4 strikes. Everyone votes for the strikes, with pressure from the union for 'yes' votes. Otherwise, I think the numbers would be much lower, because no one wants to go on strike.
'Chuckie G', you know that the union controls what craft can and can't do, the same way that they create that hostile 'us' and 'them' environment that so many employees buy into. Management says one thing, the union tells you to do something else. I have to agree that there is greed on BOTH sides. I know that I helped 'make' the company and I was happy to have a job that paid well with great benefits. I know that my pay couldn't compare to management, and I was never a manager, so I never expected that. You should be happy that the company you work for is prospering, but you have so much to complain about instead. If it's really as bad as you claim, why are you working at Verizon 'selling your soul'? |

This question and an answer or two demonstrate the lack of awareness of much of the public as to what the issues are. The Union is asking that we lose none of the benefits that we fought for over the years. The company wants to diminish health care for its retirees living on a fixed income. All workers will be retirees one day. The union is fighting to keep jobs as Verizon attempts to make future FIOS positions non-union work as it has done with Verizon Wireless. The Union is looking to maintain its workers health benefits at the same time as Verizon gives its top 5 executives $82 million in compensation in addition to free health care for life. You would think at that salary they could afford to pay for health care, not the workers who build this company. This company made $5.5 billion last year, and I don't see any posts complaining about how much the company makes. Let's see here, rich fat cats with more money than you can even imagine having versus your friends and neighbors, and you root for the fat cats. I know of three workers killed in my state in the last year, I haven't heard of any executive giving his life for this company. These record profits are coming at a time when they are still outlaying billions into the FIOS network, so their income doesn't even outpaced the investment yet and they still have made record profits. Workers are building this network, and it is the future of this company, and they want labor to build it, then take their jobs away when it is done. Take a look at a map of the internet backbone in North America and see how much of it Verizon owns, look at their profits over the years and tell me you feel sorry for the company, but the workers are greedy. I know of no worker that gets rich working at Verizon, in fact, most have to be 2 income families just to pay the bills, but the labor is greedy. When the executives of this company have to worry about how to pay for their heating oil or how to pay to fix their 1999 Subaru, then feel sorry for them. I believe it is jealousy directed because you see your neighbors. If you looked at the execs lifestyles, you'd be really jealous. Moreover, the reason a strike is necessary, is that it is the only weapon labor has to show the company the strength in unity. Without labor, there is no product for any company to make money off of. A company's goal is to make as much money as possible and that means paying its labor as little as possible. Why do you think there is slave labor? And yes, the union will suffer a lot more than the company in that Verizon still receives checks from people paying their bills, while labor has no income during a strike, but eventually the company will pay the price, and realize the resolve in its labor force. Hopefully a settlement is reached because a strike causes loss to both sides, and it should be a cooperative, not adversarial relationship. But the union is asking for security, because they could give 25% a year raises that would mean nothing without a job in 3 years. And anyone who thinks prices will come down if they pay labor less is living in a fantasy world-the only result will be more profits for the company. Cable companies pay their employees less, but their rates are higher than even Verizon's. No company's savings is passed down to the consumer-the only thing that sets prices is demand, and what the market is willing to pay, not the cost of product. And if anyone should be giving back, it is the executives, not the labor force. And the membership both CWA and IBEW both authorized a strike with by 91% and 95%, I believe. |

Unions strike because they can, the non-union members of the org would be laid off if the strike causes financial stress on the organization, not the union workers because they are protected. They haven't much to lose and the possibility of much to gain. |

in the case of verizon greed is a two way street, the company takes back as much as it gives out, greed on both sides is a compelling argument |
