It has something to do with the chain of distribution. We own a small grocery store and for the amount we pay to the supplier (who are not the farmers), we also have to put a little bit more to earn money for ourselves.

I believe it is the price demanded by the supermarket chains that has rocketed. The dairy farmer has had their price fixed for several years now. Any dairy farmer who wants to sell his milk has got to sell at the price dictated by the supermarket.

Mad Cow disease is part of it. The first cow they diagnose with it, in Washington State, was a dairy cow. Most dairy cows come from Canada. There was a ban on importing cattle from Canada after that dairy cow was discovered to have Mad Cow disease. I dont know it that ban has been lifted yet.
