Why is Wal-Mart closing its Sewing Department?

I have just learned that Wal-mart intends to close its sewing department. April 2007 the sewing area within the Knoxville, TN Wal-marts will be closed. While the supply of fabric and notions in minimal, the thought of not being able to purchase these items is disturbing.

It was a business decision. If the merchandise isn't selling and the department is losing money, you don't keep it. When you have to keep marking things down to clearance and selling them below cost, it doesn't make sense to keep. It's the same reason they did away with layaway. One of the signs of a good retail store is how frequently the inventory turns over. (How quickly things sell.) Having product sit for an extended length of time is bad on the accounting side of things. If your store's budget is tied up in things that don't sell, they won't be able to buy new things that will sell. Walmart may seem like it has an endless supply of money but they do look at the tiny details like this for each store.

Seeing as Walmart probably put any other sewing store out of business, that probably sucks for you. They are probably closing it because they aren't making monster profits off of the stuff, even though they are getting it for pennies via slave labor from China.

I predict that Walfarts of the future will only sell high end expensive items that no one who works there can even afford.
